Police search apartment in Revere, Boston as part of probe into marathon bombs that killed three and injured 144

Two bombs exploded in the packed streets near the finish line of the Boston Marathon today, killing three and injuring more than 144 in a terrifying scene of shattered glass, bloodstained pavement and severed limbs at the world’s oldest and most prestigious marathon.

There was no word on the motive or who may have carried out the attack, and police said they had no suspects in custody. However, at least two people are “talking with police”.

At the White House, President Barack Obama vowed that those responsible will “feel the full weight of justice.”

Paruyr Hayrikyan

An Armenian presidential candidate has been shot in the center of Yerevan, the country’s capital, late Thursday. The 64-year-old Paruyr Hayrikyan of the Union for National Self-Determination party, was taken to hospital following the incident.

Hayrikyan was taken to the Saint Gregory the Illuminator medical center with two gunshot wounds, in the shoulder and in the chest. The chest wound is considered serious, but not immediately life-threatening, medics said.

Hayrikyan is conscious but has not yet been operated on. A number of high-profile figures visited the politician in his ward, including Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, Yerevan Police Chief Vladimir Gasparyan and Speaker of Parliament Hovik Abrahamyan.

During the 2012 Presidential election, President Obama boasted about the third quarter growth of the America’s GDP, but the fourth quarter is a completely different story. The country experienced a decline in GDP in the last quarter for the first time since 2009 and many critics believe that somehow the Obama administration manipulated the data to come out victorious in the November election. Peter Schiff, president of Euro Pacific Capital, gives us his take on how the government could have played with numbers.

 National Review

That would have been some clarifying campaign speech from the president. From Steve Moore’s interview with John Boehner:

What stunned House Speaker John Boehner more than anything else during his prolonged closed-door budget negotiations with Barack Obama was this revelation: “At one point several weeks ago,” Mr. Boehner says, “the president said to me, ‘We don’t have a spending problem.’ “

I am talking to Mr. Boehner in his office on the second floor of the Capitol, 72 hours after the historic House vote to take America off the so-called fiscal cliff by making permanent the Bush tax cuts on most Americans, but also to raise taxes on high earners. In the interim, Mr. Boehner had been elected to serve his second term as speaker of the House. Throughout our hourlong conversation, as is his custom, he takes long drags on one cigarette after another.

The president’s insistence that Washington doesn’t have a spending problem, Mr. Boehner says, is predicated on the belief that massive federal deficits stem from what Mr. Obama called “a health-care problem.” Mr. Boehner says that after he recovered from his astonishment—”They blame all of the fiscal woes on our health-care system”—he replied: “Clearly we have a health-care problem, which is about to get worse with ObamaCare. But, Mr. President, we have a very serious spending problem.” He repeated this message so often, he says, that toward the end of the negotiations, the president became irritated and said: “I’m getting tired of hearing you say that.”

Federal spending and revenue as a percent of GDP

Business Insider, St. Louis Fed

Federal government spending (red) vs. tax revenue (blue)

Yesterday, I pointed out how, in a stubborn attempt to avoid raising taxes on the richest 2% of Americans, the Republicans in Congress have essentially agreed to raise taxes on everyone. The Republicans have done this by refusing to accept President Obama’s attempt at a compromise, which preserves low tax rates for 98% of the country while raising taxes modestly on the top 2%.

Well, you can’t assign blame to the formerly pragmatic and responsible Republican party without getting some flak.

Egypt’s former presidential candidate Shafiq calls for Morsi to quit

CAIRO: Ex-presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq said on Sunday that Egypt’s president and the Muslim Brotherhood, of which he is a senior leader, must relinquish power immediately to end the ongoing crisis.

The Hosni Mubarak-era Prime Minister, who lost to President Mohamed Morsi in June, told London’s Asharq Al-Awsat that the entire regime needs to be replaced.

He argued that the number of Morsi’s supporters has been greatly exaggerated and is in fact less than one million people.

Shafiq described Morsi’s claims that foreign agendas were behind the chaos in Egypt as “nonsense”, “irresponsible” and groundless.

He argued that the downfall of the Brotherhood in Egypt will create a domino effect in the region.

Political turmoil erupted when Morsi issued a constitutional decree on November 22 expanding his power and shielding his actions from judicial challenges, and escalated when an Islamist-dominated assembly finished writing a draft constitution.
