New figures that reveal the staggering amount of food waste in the British parliament have prompted calls for MPs to donate their unused meals to those in need.

Shadow Commons Leader Chris Bryant called on the government to give uneaten meals to local food banks in the capital.

“Last year 1.2 million sausages were sent to landfill in Rhondda Cynon Taf alone, which is why it is great that the local council is now signing everybody up to proper food recycling,” the Welsh Labour MP said.

“But new figures show that this House last year wasted 45,000 meals that were just tipped in the bin.

“With 33 Trussell Trust food banks within the M25 and an estimated 70,000 children in London going to bed hungry each night, would it not be time for the leader to institute a new scheme to donate unused food from this palace to local London food banks?”

SAN DIEGO – A group of San Diegans are outraged after building a tiny house for a homeless man only to have police arrest him for living in it.

Lisa Kogan was among those who raised money to have the tiny home built.

“What has really hit me in my heart is there’s a need out here, there’s a need for people to have shelter,” Kogan said.

Kogan saw a YouTube video about a man in Los Angeles who was building tiny homes for homeless people.

“I became inspired and I got my friends behind and donated money,” Kogan said. “We built it last month. It’s a little house, it’s moveable, it has wheels.”

Kogan wanted someone deserving. She found him.

“Red cleans up around here every day, Red’s a good guy,” said Anthony Brown, who sleeps in a tent across the street from a church on 16th Street.

Red, whose real name is Michael Clark, sleeps on the streets of downtown San Diego. He also works as a deacon at the International Love Ministries of God church, which helps the homeless downtown. On Saturday, Kogan gave Red his new tiny house.

A homeless dog’s transformation: sick, sad and lonely on the streets, he is rescued and turns into a joyful dog surrounded by friends.
This little dog was living in a cardboard box, on the streets and was in a very bad shape when we rescued him. We do not know if he ever had an owner as he didn’t have a microchip but taking into account his skin condition, he seemed to have been roaming the streets for a very long time: full of fleas, he developed an allergic dermatitis which led to hair loss on some parts of his body (especially on his neck and back). Untreated, it progressed, became chronic and got infected with Malassezia, a yeast that also caused him otitis. We had him on specific medication and medicated shampoos, but hair has still to grow on the affected areas. Except for the stubborn skin problem that we hope will be solved, Buzu is a healthy dog. He is ~5-6 years old, still a little shy with people he doesn’t know, very submissive and calm. He’s not very interested in exploring new territories and feels safer in the areas he knows, he likes to take a few runs in the garden, then to relax in the sun. He is friendly with other dogs and his best friend is a cat 🙂 He appreciates most the things he didn’t have on the street: love, food and security.
He is the kindest dog we’ve ever met and it’s so hard to understand how could have someone abandoned him and why he had been on the streets for so many years.

UPDATE 15 FEB 2015: BUZU WAS ADOPTED!
We managed to find Buzu a wonderful adoptive family in England.
After a very long trip (~2000 km) he arrived yesterday at his forever home. It’s the perfect place for him: his “mom” is not only a great animal lover but she also has a lot of experience with dogs, running a day care center for dogs and working closely with veterinarians. So Buzu will be overwhelmed with love and provided all the medical care he needs. He’s sharing his home with another lovely dog and a cat, which is just perfect because he loves having friends around. Thank you so much Emma for making Buzu a part of your family and offering him the home he has been waiting for all this time!
We must also thank everyone who helped us and got involved in Buzu’s story.
And thank you to all of you who have shared his photos/video on Facebook or YouTube – that’s how his story got to his adoptive family. Our gratitude to all Howl Of A Dog friends!

Now if you  watched the  video then you would have seen a  heavily  edited  video  that made  comments available to some and  asked  questions  of others.  However,  they were  never  in  sync.  The  responses  of the  alleged   college  students were  never  the  same students  who were  asked a question on the  video.  Only  some were in  sync.

Why is that?

Why  would  anyone  who had a  straightforward  agenda take the  time  to so obviously  over edit this  video?

Why are some  over reacting to the  video itself?

The  alleged  purpose of the  video was  to  find out  what  kind of  reaction  would  be elicited  from  Yale  students at the  possibility  of  having the  First  amendment repealed.

Let  me  just  say  that  the  way the  video  is  edited  and  how  it  is  pieced  together  leaves  some  serious  questions  as  to  whether

1) The  students  who signed  the  paper he  was  presenting  actually  were asked  about t he   removal of the  First  amendment.

2) The  students  who actually  signed the   petition were actually and  honestly  informed of the alleged  intent of the  petition they were  signing.

The  video’s  editing  make it  almost  impossible to  believe what is allegedly  revealed in  the video.  If the  video in fact  truly  was legitimate there  would have  been  no need  for the  exaggerated  editing.  The  presentation of the video in it’s entirety would have served  to convey the  true message  of the results  found on the Yale  Campus in  question.

Adding to the  very  obvious attempt at manipulation of this story is the  comment of  one  of the  students in  question on  Youtube.

For everyone who believes what they see in this carefully, and admirably, edited video… and believe me, a lot of editing did go into this… Here is a comment from one of the students who was interviewed in the video, which I’m sharing as a fellow Yale student: “This video just came to my attention, and my immediate reaction is outrage and frustration. I was asked about this petition and have been included in this video, but what Mr. Horowitz has presented is a blatantly false narrative of what actually occurred. It is clear to me that this is an intentional misrepresentation, with the purpose of advancing a political agenda and narrative. When I was coming out of the dining hall, a friend and I were stopped by this man, who asked if we could spare a few minutes to talk. Both of us being in a rush, didn’t want to engage in a debate, so when he said he wanted to REPEAL THE FIRST AMENDMENT, I had absolutely no interest in being lectured by a crazy man in the middle of reading week and finals. So, thinking he was just a crazy guy with a clipboard and not a man with a camera, I told him, “This is fantastic. I absolutely agree. I don’t agree with your approach however, but I appreciate what you’re doing here. Good luck.” Then I walked away. My hope was that by showing tacit support for his position, he wouldn’t follow me or insist that I stay and debate him. Now, this is NOT what the video shows. Of course in the video, they have conveniently left out when I said I disagreed with his approach (i.e. to repeal the first amendment…). The editing of the video deliberately misconstrues what happened, and I am positive that Mr. Horowitz is very cognizant of this. In fact, it clearly seems to be his objective: to push his narrative. While I can only speak for myself, I am very compelled to believe that a similar twisting of the truth was done for the 3 second soundbites he has of the other people in this video…. I am disgusted with the way that Horowitz has taken my words and negated my position just so he can rack up the views on a video and bait an audience into believing what he is selling. What I find most upsetting though, is that this video is featured on the FRONT PAGE of Fox News. How dare you, this is not only shameful, but false journalism.”

The  students  recounting  of  his  experience that  day  does  not even remotely  resemble  what  the  article  claims.  The  message  both  Fox  News and  Ami  Horowitz are  conveying in this  video and  article seem to be  at  odds with what  the  student claims  actually  took place.

 

It is  reminiscent  of the  coverage  of  OCCUPY by  Fox News.  All  participants  were  dirty drug addled  hippies  with  no moral  or  intellectual worth.

 

Hatred  and  dissent  seems to be the  norm  for  Fox News where  any opinion, view  or  political leaning  other than  their  own is the  enemy.  There  is  nothing   unbiased  or  honest  about  them.

“Mr. [Rupert] Murdoch has a talent for making money, and I understand that their programming is geared toward making money. The only argument [White House communications director] Anita [Dunn] was making is that they’re not really a news station if you watch even — it’s not just their commentators, but a lot of their news programming.

“It’s really not news — it’s pushing a point of view. And the bigger thing is that other news organizations like yours ought not to treat them that way, and we’re not going to treat them that way. We’re going to appear on their shows. We’re going to participate but understanding that they represent a point of view.”

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Fox “is not a news organization so much as it has a perspective.”

Milk is truly a nutritional powerhouse. A one-cup serving provides 30 percent of our daily value for calcium, 25 percent for vitamin D, 24 percent of riboflavin (a B vitamin), 20 percent of phosphorus and 11 percent for potassium.

In fact, a cup of milk has more nutrition than most fruit juices and sports drinks, and it is one of the best sources of dietary calcium that your body can readily absorb.

How much should you drink? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children ages one through three should get about two servings of milk daily, three servings daily for kids ages four through eight.

For children, milk is a key source of calcium and vitamin D, and after age two, they should switch from whole milk to low or fat-free milk. For everyone age nine and older, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends at least three cups of milk or milk equivalent per day.

Fox-Can-Lie Lawsuit

People frequently refer to a court case that Fox won, which essentially gives the media the right to lie. This came from an appellate court decision that states that the FCC’s news distortion policy does not qualify as a rule, law, or regulation.

Jane Akre and her husband Steve Wilson are former employees of Fox owned-and-operated station WTVT in Tampa, Florida. In 1997, they were fired from the station after refusing to knowingly include false information in their report concerning the Monsanto Company’s production of RBGH, a drug designed to make cows produce more milk. They successfully sued under Florida’s whistle blower law and were awarded a US $425,000 settlement by jury decision. However, Fox appealed to an appellate court and won, after the court declared that the FCC policy against falsification that Fox violated was just a policy and not a “law, rule, or regulation”, and so the whistle blower law did not apply.

The court agreed with WTVT’s (Fox) argument “that the FCC’s policy against the intentional falsification of the news — which the FCC has called its “news distortion policy” — does not qualify as the required “law, rule, or regulation” under section 448.102.[…] Because the FCC’s news distortion policy is not a “law, rule, or regulation” under section 448.102, Akre has failed to state a claim under the whistle-blower’s statute.”[1]

In 2001, Jane Akre and her husband won the Goldman Environmental Prize as a recognition for their report on RBGH. [2]

In 2004, Fox filed a US$1.7 million counter-suit against Akre and Wilson for trial fees and costs. Akre and Wilson both appear in a major portion of the 2004/5 critical documentary, The Corporation.

In 2007 Jane became the editor-in-chief of the national news desk at InjuryBoard.com.[3]

Jon Stewart Breaks It Down: Fox News Is NOT News

Once again it takes a fake news program to reveal where the real fake news is. Jon Stewart, of the Daily Show, continues to prove that he is a far better informed and a more insightful media analyst than just about any of the so-called professionals with degrees and awards and jobs on “reputable” news networks.

It is apparent to any objective observer that Fox is a journalistic wasteland. Their entire schedule is populated by partisan hacks whose intent is to misinform their audience with reporting that is so slanted as to be little more than press releases and promos for Republican operatives and issues. They even feature a Psycho-Chicken Little (Glenn Beck) who accuses Obama and his staff of worshiping Mao, even as he himself admits that he idolizes Adolf Hitler. But it took Stewart to artfully, and hilariously, point out that Fox has defined themselves into a corner. Stewart, noting that Fox regards their news day as the hours between 9:00am to 4:00pm, and 6:00pm to 8:00pm, rips to shreds the false Fox fiction that there is a distinction between their news content and their editorials.

Fox Admits to CNN That It Traffics in Opinion Not News

After a brief but concerted challenge by the White House to the credibility of Fox News Channel as a legitimate news organization — including a detailed take down by Communications Director Anita Dunn on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” on Sunday — a spokesman for Fox responded with a de facto admission that the channel is nothing more than a propaganda arm of the Republican Party and the conservative movement.

CNN described Fox’s statement this way: “In a written statement given to CNN, Fox News said its programming was comparable to the editorial page of a newspaper.”

The fact that Fox says its programming is based on opinions not facts would likely come as a shock to Fox viewers — but, of course, they’ll never know about it. Fox will protect them from this harsh reality the same way it deals with all news that makes conservatives look badly: by not covering it.

Here’s the statement by Fox to CNN:

“An increasing number of viewers are relying on Fox News for both news and opinion,” Fox News Senior VP Michael Clemente said in the statement, “and the average news consumer can certainly distinguish between the A-section of the newspaper and the editorial page, which is what our programming represents.

“So with all due respect to anyone who might still be confused about the difference between news reporting and vibrant opinion, my suggestion would be to talk about the stories and the facts rather than the [sic] attack the messenger . . . which over time has never worked.”

Not surprisingly, this statement from Fox was carefully crafted to obfuscate the truth from busy or hapless readers. Like the classic non-denial denial, it is a non-admission admission.

While the world was hammering out a historic agreement to curb carbon emissions—urged along by California, no less—the state was dealing with an embarrassing belch of its own. Methane, a greenhouse gas 70 times more potent than carbon dioxide, has been leaking out of a natural gas storage site in southern California for nearly two months, and a fix won’t arrive until spring.

The site is leaking up to 145,000 pounds per hour, according to the California Air Resources Board. In just the first month, that’s added up to 80,000 tons, or about a quarter of the state’s ordinary methane emissions over the same period. The Federal Aviation Administration recently banned low-flying planes from flying over the site, since engines plus combustible gas equals kaboom.

Steve Bohlen, who until recently was state oil and gas supervisor, can’t remember the last time California had to deal with a gas leak this big. “I asked this question of our staff of 30 years,” says Bohlen. “This is unique in the last three or four decades. This is an unusual event, period.”

Families living downwind of the site have also noticed the leak—boy, have they noticed. Methane itself is odorless, but the mercaptan added to natural gas gives it a characteristic sulfurous smell. Over 700 households have at least temporarily relocated, and one family has filed a lawsuit against the Southern California Gas Company alleging health problems from the gas. The gas levels are too low for long-term health effects, according to health officials, but the odor is hard to ignore.

Given both the local and global effects of the gas leak, why is it taking so long to stop? The answer has to do with the site at Aliso Canyon, an abandoned oil field. Yes, that’s right, natural gas is stored underground in old oil fields. It’s common practice in the US, but largely unique to this country. The idea goes that geological sites that were good at keeping in oil for millions of years would also be good at keeping in gas.

Police Chief Resigns After Caging Family’s Puppy and Killing it at Shooting Range

Sparta, MO — Police Chief Andrew Spencer resigned this week after it was revealed that he shot and killed an innocent dog that was in a cage and meant no one any harm. To make matters even worse, he took the puppy to a firing range and killed it there because he did not want to deal with finding its home.

Spencer found the dog and managed to get it into a cage using a catcher pole. He then wrote in his report that he had planned to take the dog to a shelter where it would be “destroyed,” but then he got another call about a car accident so he decided to do it himself.

The report said that he had planned to go to “the cheapest vet to destroy the dog at the cost of the city.” However, the report continued “Due to the higher priority call and the imminent destruction of the dog, I decided it was best to destroy the dog and respond to the accident.”

After the fact, Spencer claimed that the dog was charging at people in the neighborhood. However, he said that he did not believe that the dog bit anyone, otherwise he would have had it taken to the vet and tested for rabies.

A Texas plumber has dealt with death threats and abusive phone calls after the Ford truck he sold to a local dealership showed up in the hands of jihadists in Syria ‒ with his company sign intact. Now he is suing for at least $1 million in damages.

Mark Oberholtzer, who runs Mark-1 Plumbing in Galveston, Texas, says that Autonation Ford Gulf Freeway, a dealership in Houston, resold his 2005 Ford F-250 pick-up without removing the decal with his company’s name and phone number. After the truck ended up in the hands of a Syrian rebel group, a photo of it showed up on Twitter and was featured on the final episode of Comedy Central’s ‘Colbert Report’.

Colbert joked that Syria “is going down the toilet, but for the first time, they know who to call to unclog it.”

By the end of that day, “Mark-1’s office, Mark-1’s business phone, and Mark’s personal cell phone had received over 1,000 phone calls from around the nation,” ranging from degrading to expletive-laced death threats, according to the lawsuit filed in Harris County by Oberholtzer’s attorneys. In the complaint, Oberholtzer says the dealership stopped him from removing the decal, claiming that doing so would damage the paint. At no time did anyone at the dealership inform Oberholtzer that they would “leave the decals on the truck, which would be transferred in some fashion to international jihadists conducting warfare upon innocents in Syria,” the lawsuit stated, calling what happened an “incomprehensible and horrific eventuality.”

Noting that the plumber had sold several of his old trucks to dealerships in Texas over the years, the lawsuit goes on to add: “On none of these occasions have any of those dealers transferred to international jihadists the traded-in vehicle with Plaintiffs’ identifying marking still upon them.”

According to Carfax vehicle history reports, attached to the lawsuit as evidence, the truck was sold at an auction on November 11, 2013. It was exported from Houston and ended up in Mersin, a port in southeastern Turkey. On December 15, 2014, a photo of the truck posted on Twitter showed it being used as a weapons platform by a jihadist group in Syria – with the “Mark-1 Plumbing” sign still there.

Shortly after Montenegro’s bid to join the North Atlantic Alliance was given the green light, thousands flooded the streets of the capital to protest the upcoming membership and remind people of lives taken during the NATO invasion of 1999.

Former Montenegrin President Momir Bulatovic and opposition leaders called the rally on Saturday in Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica. They gathered at least 5,000 supporters outside the parliament, according to the local Vijesti newspaper. The protesters held national flags while patriotic and pro-Russian chants ringing out from the assembled crowd.

Bulatovic, who was also prime minister of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1998 to 2000, told the rally that joining NATO would mean “blood of innocent people on our hands,” and emphasized his country had been against the alliance’s wars until recently.

“What has Afghanistan done wrong, what has Iraq done wrong? Why has Libya been destroyed, what’s happening today in Syria? Can we close our eyes to that?” he said.

By the end of 2015, the chronically homeless population of Utah may be virtually gone. And the secret is quite simple:

Give homes to the homeless.

“We call it housing first, employment second,” said Lloyd Pendleton, director of Utah’s Homeless Task Force.

Even Pendleton used to think trying to eradicate homelessness using such an approach was a foolish idea.

“I said: ‘You guys must be smoking something. This is totally unrealistic,'” Pendleton said.

But the results are hard to dispute.

In 2005, Utah was home to 1,932 chronically homeless. By April 2015, there were only 178 — a 91 percent drop statewide.

“It’s a philosophical shift in how we go about it,” Pendleton said. “You put them in housing first … and then help them begin to deal with the issues that caused them to be homeless.”

Chronically homeless persons — those living on the streets for more than a year, or for four times in three years, and have a debilitating condition — make up 10 percent of Utah’s homeless population but take up more than 50 percent of the state’s resources for the homeless.
