Activist collective Anonymous have released details of the 2015 Million Mask March, which will see coordinated demonstrations in cities across the globe protesting against corruption, human rights abuses and censorship.

Following in the footsteps of previous marches, the worldwide demonstration will take place on November 5, coinciding with bonfire night in the UK.

This year’s message is “building a better future through collective action,” a statement from the group released on Monday reads.

The London march in 2014 attracted over 1,000 participants who marched through the city center wearing distinctive Guy Fawkes masks, which have become the unofficial emblem of the movement.

Fawkes, part of a band of persecuted English Catholics, was captured and executed by the British state after attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. His image was popularized by the 2005 film adaptation of the Alan Moore graphic novel V for Vendetta.

A worldwide day of protests and cyber attacks against governments, banks and security firms has been launched by Hacker collective Anonymous to mark Guy Fawkes Day. Hundreds of people marched in London, while another rally hit Washington, DC.

Around 200 Anonymous supporters, according to RT’s London Bureau, assembled in London’s Trafalgar Square for Operation Vendetta, a march to the Houses of Parliament. The group itself claims over 9,000 people joined the action.

The demonstrators were carrying banners reading, “We are Anonymous. We are the legion” or “Stop creating imaginary debt!”  At the Houses of Parliament they were stopped by police.

Minor scuffles broke out outside parliament as a few protestors attempted to push police lines back, but the bulk of OpVendetta remained peaceful.

The “march, strike and protest” in London, as well as a similar event planned outside of the US White House in Washington are meant to pay homage to the 2005 film V for Vendetta.

“On November 5th 2012 WE THE PEOPLE will march on Washington DC peacefully and unarmed to arrest all members of congress, the president, and all supreme court justices where they will be held without bond until a full independent investigation and trial have been completed. We must re-elect our government within 90 days in order to stave of unrest,” organizers behind the march announced.

A rash of cyber attacks were reported on Monday in line with the the 5th of November “V For Vendetta” inspired hacking spree.

Several Australian government sites were targeted during the global day of protest, while Argentina’s government bank was also reportedly hacked.

An attack on Internet security firm Symantec was originally attributed to the hacktivist collective, but a non-Anonymous affiliated group called @Doxbin later claimed responsibility for taking their site down.

The website for the US National Security Agency suddenly went offline Friday in what some claimed was an Anonymous DDoS attack. The agency denied it was under attack, however, saying it was merely updating software.

NSA.gov was unavailable globally for several hours on Friday. Twitter accounts belonging to people loosely affiliated with the Anonymous hacktivism movement suggested they were responsible.

Twitter users @AnonymousOwn3r and @TruthIzSexy both were quick to comment on the matter, and implied that a distributed denial-of-service attack, or DDoS, may have been waged as an act of protest against the NSA

So If it’s a attack comming from me, or maybe from a country? won’t say! It’s just looks like a start of a cyber war

S.3xe @TruthIzSexy

NSA remains down! 😀 You do not fuck the peoples human rights and information!

Allegations that those users participated in the DDoS — a method of over-loading a website with too much traffic — are currently unverified, and @AnonymousOwn3r has previously taken credit for downing websites in a similar fashion, although those claims have been largely contested.

Urgent Message from Anonymous to Mankind…

Anonymous launches video ahead of the Million Mask March

By Justin King

The collective behind the global protest that will occur on November 5th in over 150 countries launched a YouTube video today to raise awareness of the march.
Organizer of the Washington, D.C. event, John Fairhurst, explained that, as with many things within Anonymous, the event has taken on a life of its own. Saying that there are whole websites dedicated to the event, which he has no direct affiliation with. Anonymous is a leaderless collective that thrives on ideas, and once an idea is proposed and accepted, the originator of that idea steps back into the faceless crowd of supporters and joins everyone else that has elected to support the idea. The idea of a global march occurring simultaneously in cities around the world resonated within Anonymous. There are publicly organized protests occurring in over 50 U.S. cities and in almost every developed nation’s capital. The collective has established an event map to keep track of the different demonstration sites. Many countries where open protesting is prohibited have been organizing their events in secret and are not included on the map.

Did Anonymous Hack Israel’s Mossad Spy Agency?

The hackivists at Anonymous, along with Turkish and other hackers, are claiming they hacked into Israel‘s Mossad spy agency. More specifically, Turkish group Red Hack claims to have stolen the names, locations, phone numbers and email addresses of 30,000 Mossad agents, while Sector 404 launched a distributed denial of service (DDOS) to paralyze Mossad’s Web site. The leaked documents can be found here.

As of Sunday evening, Mossad’s Web site (or at least the English-language page) appears to be functioning. Naturally, the Israeli government is denying that any vital information was compromised. But one doesn’t have to be a master spy like George Smiley  to note a few inconsistencies in the claims of Anonymous.

First, if you look at the list of leaked names (some are translated from Hebrew into English), most have Israeli email addresses and live in Israeli towns. It appears a tad unlikely that a deep-cover Mossad agent in Tehran sends cute Persian cat photos on his Israeli email account. And as an analyst pointed out to the Times of Israel, some of the listings are for Israeli businesses such as auto parts stores or food companies, thus suggesting that at least some of the names are just plain old government contractors. I did Google some of the email addresses, and in one case, I found that the owner was listed as a participant in a conference in Israel of international Jewish activists. Not exactly a subtle cover for Shlomo Bond, Double-Oy-Seven.

Should the teens who filmed the young woman being sexually assaulted be held accountable?

Are Anonymous The Heroes Of The Steubenville Rape Case?

By: Wednesday March 20, 2013 10:07 am

Questions still surround the Steubenville Rape Case even after the guilty verdict that sent two of the perpetrators to prison for years. David Zirin argues that without the involvement of hackers the case was set to be dropped.

I really think that the heroes in this story are the hackers who got the photos out there because I think that actually led to a kind of shaming process that pushed this trial forward

It is hard to conclusively prove anything in this regard, as is the nature of counter-factuals, but there is some evidence to suggest that the school and law enforcement were not taking the rape seriously, at least initially. One of the journalists covering the rape reported that Steubenville residents were reporting to her that a coverup was taking place.

Soon locals began contacting me stating that they believed there was a cover-up into investigation of the charges. That’s not a new allegation for Steubenville. There is also a belief among residents of Steubenville that high school athletes are given a pass when it comes to accountability for bad behavior.

The notion of giving student athletes or “jocks” a pass on sexual assault or really a number of offenses is nothing new. Athletes are given preferential treatment in a number of ways as Zirin notes.

There is so much hero worship that goes on in high schools and colleges of these young men, and there’s so many adults who effectively pay these men in worship and kiss these guys’ butts…

They’re given women as if women are, in fact, part of a gutter economy that says, ‘You are great, here is what you get,’ and that does breed a culture where these young men don’t understand that ‘no’ means ‘no.’ And it normalizes a culture where young men and women, like in Steubenville, can see what’s happening right in front of their face and yet not see a crime taking place.
