1,000 McDonald’s Customers Exposed To Hepatitis A, Sparking Class Action Lawsuit

In November, more than 1,000 customers were potentially exposed to Hepatitis A after having their meal at McDonald’s prepared by an employee who was recently diagnosed (Nov. 13th) with the virus. The employee who works at a location in Waterloo, New York, could have contaminated food, utensils or dishes if they didn’t wash their hands after using the bathroom. The Seneca County Health Department has advised the community that if they ate at the Waterloo McDonald’s on Nov. 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th and or 8th, that they need to be tested and vaccinated.

However, one customer is suing.

The branch’s owner, Jascor Inc., is being sued by Christopher Welch in a class-action lawsuit, filed on Nov. 18th, for potentially exposing people to the virus, which causes liver infections. Mr. Welch ate at the restaurant on at least one occasion when the worker was present so he received the vaccination. Some of the customers who ate there during that time have said they will get tested but not get the vaccine.

There is nothing wrong with Cookie, who was dumped at Yonkers Animal Shelter at just six months old and spent the next six years of her life there.

The only thing that is wrong is that she remained homeless all of these precious years instead of enjoying life as a loving family member.

Cookie, now seven, was lucky to land at Yonkers, where she was given all the time she needed to find her match. Unfortunately, the shelter admits to having very little foot traffic in Cookie’s younger years.

So there she sat, waiting. Safe, not urgent, and overlooked.

And there she remained, hoping the right person would come along to take her home.

(Reuters) – A New York Police Department campaign to burnish its image via social media instead produced a flood of pictures of apparent police brutality and tweets critical of the force being shared at a rate of thousands an hour.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said on Wednesday he would continue and expand the NYPD Twitter campaign a day after it backfired, triggering an outpouring of negative images including police violence at New York’s Occupy Wall Street demonstrations, an NYPD officer pointing a gun at a dog, and an officer asleep in a subway car.

“The reality of policing is that oftentimes our actions are lawful, but they look awful,” Bratton told a news briefing at New York City Hall.

“Most of those photos that I looked at are old news,” said Bratton, appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio to take over from Ray Kelly, who served for 12 years under de Blasio’s predecessor, Michael Bloomberg.

NYPD commissioner welcomes attention from disastrous #myNYPD hashtag

The New York Police Department’s attempt at using social media to connect with constituents on Tuesday went…well, let’s say awry.

An initial tweet asked people to post photos of themselves with police officers along with the hashtag #myNYPD. Obviously this went poorly, because obviously it was going to go poorly, because these things can really only go poorly (we’ll get back to that in a moment). In response, people sent in lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of photos of New York police officers doing violent things to people. (Like the photo at the top of this post. It’s almost two years old, but thanks to the #myNYPD hashtag, it has been everywhere over the last 24 hours.)

William J. Bratton, the police commissioner, said he isn’t too bothered by the reaction:

“I kind of welcome the attention,” Bratton said Wednesday as the negative tweets kept coming nearly 24 hours after cops invited the cyber-submissions….

“Most of the pictures I looked at, they’re old news,” Bratton said, tossing previous NYPD administrations under the patrol car. “They’ve been out there for a long time.”

Hepatitis A Exposure at Restaurant in Nyack, NY

Seems like it’s the season for hepatitis A. A confirmed case of acute hepatitis A has been identified in a food handler at the La Fontana restaurant in Nyack, New York. Anyone who ate there between March 19 and April 1, 2014 may have been exposed to hepatitis A.

 

The County of Rockland Department of Health is recommending that everyone who ate at the restaurant on March 29, March 30, or April 1, 2014 receive a vaccination. The vaccination is about 80% to 90% effective. The Rockland County Department of Health is offering free vaccines to patrons and employees of the restaurant on Sunday, April 13, 2014 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and Monday, April 14, 2014 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Rockland County Fire Training Center at 35 Firemens Memorial Drive in Pomona.

Meet Bentley, the three-year-old dog that nobody wants.

When Bentley was just a pup, he was surrendered by his owner to a shelter in Nassau County in Long Island, N.Y.

Bentley was one of a litter of pups surrendered that day, so many years ago – his siblings found homes, but he never was adopted.

Today, the now adult dog, continues to wait, and hope that at some point, someone might want to call him their own.

At twelve plus years of age, and mostly blind, Athena is no longer considered to be a “highly adoptable” dog – a fact which her prior owner discovered she attempted to secure a new home for the elderly dog.

Though Athena’s former guardian loved her beautiful senior dog, she was no longer able to care for her, and after attempts to find Athena a new home failed, that person reached out to the Hempstead Town Shelter in Wantagh, N.Y., to have the dog put down.

The shelter staff went to retrieve Athena and promised the dog’s owner, who is disabled and had fallen ill, that they would try to find a home for Athena before euthanasia was considered.

Trader kills self in finance world’s latest suicide

A Manhattan trader was killed Tuesday morning by a speeding Long Island Rail Road commuter train, marking at least the seventh suicide of a financial professional this year.

 

Edmund (Eddie) Reilly, 47, a trader at Midtown’s Vertical Group, jumped in front of an LIRR train at 6 a.m. near the Syosset train station.

 

He was declared dead at the scene.

 

Reilly’s identity was confirmed by Salvatore Arena, an LIRR spokesperson, who said an investigation into the incident was continuing.

 

Passengers on the west-bound express train told MTA investigators they saw a man standing by the tracks before he jumped in front of the train, Arena said.

A New York-based trader committed suicide by jumping in front of a train, the New York Post reports. 

The trader was 47-year-old Edmund “Eddie” Charles Reilly, the report said.

He worked for Midtown-based boutique investment bank The Vertical Group.

At three years of age, “Archie,” has spent half of his life impounded at the facility and the time has taken its toll.

Archie wants a friend – be it human or canine – he wants someone to spend his time with.

This handsome boy has been at the facility since July 2012 – an incredibly long period of time to be without a family and without one-on-one companionship.

Archie is described as friendly and playful – he loves belly rubs and does not mind being handled. Archie needs to be adopted – he needs a family and he needs to be loved.

Animal abuser registry approved for New York City

Despite former-mayor Michael Bloomberg’s veto of a bill to have a city-wide animal abuse registry for New York, N.Y., the legislation has now been approved thanks to a unanimous vote by the New York City Council reported the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

Last Tuesday, the council-members voted to create an animal-abuse registry for all convicted animal abusers.

Convicted animal abusers will also be prohibited from owning or living with animals and if a convicted animal abuser fails to register, they could face misdemeanor charges and time behind bars.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund, which has been involved in the passing of this legislation since 2012, hopes that the registry will help to keep innocent animals out of the hands of convicted abusers.

Every minute of every day could be filled with requests for death row dogs – it is a sad and overwhelming fact.

It is a thrill to be able to share the dogs who escaped an unfair fate – dogs like “Dice,” a volunteer favorite, surrendered by his owner, who was slated to be killed on February 19 at the New York Animal Care and Control facility in Manhattan.

Dice did not get killed – he was pulled from the facility at the last moment and he has already been adopted.
