Description The Los Angeles Fire Department says a ruptured oil pipe near the suburb of Glendale has spilled about 50,000 gallons of crude oil onto streets. According to the Fire Department, the leak from a 20-inch pipe was reported at about 12:15 a.m. Thursday in Atwater Village and the oil line was remotely shut off. No injuries were reported. Oil spilled over approximately half a mile and is knee-high in some areas. Firefighters and hazardous materials crews are on the scene. A handful of commercial businesses are affected, including a strip club that was evacuated. Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott says there’s no “visible evidence” that the oil has entered storm drains, which empty into the Los Angeles River. But he says it’s possible that oil has seeped under manhole covers.

The Los Angeles Fire Department says a ruptured oil pipe has caused about 10,000 gallons of crude oil to spill on to the city’s streets.

The oil – which covers a half-mile area and is knee-high in some places – escaped after a break in an above-ground pipeline outside 5175 West San Fernando Road in the Atwater Village suburb.

According to Los Angeles Fire Department, oil was spurting 15 to 20 feet into the air from a burst 20-inch pipe, with the leak reported shortly after midnight local time.

 

Clean up: Hazardous material specialists are also working at the scene amid concern that the massive spill could cause an environmental disaster. Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott says there is currently no ‘visible evidence’ that the oil has entered storm drains

The flow of oil to the pipe was remotely shut down shortly within 10 minutes of the burst being detected, but the leak continued for another 45 minutes.

A 20-inch oil pipeline is medium-sized by industry standards and would generally transport about 200,000 barrels per day based on average rates. There was no immediate information about the specific capacity or throughput of the line.

‘This oil comes from the Bakersfield area, this is a pumping transfer station and pumping transfer station then transfers the oil to a storage facility in Long Beach,’ Batallion Chief David Spence said.

Four workers at the nearby Baxter industrial plant were reportedly evaluated for general illness and respiratory concerns, with two of them taken to hospital, according to NBC Los Angeles,

Oil was seen shooting towards the sky and on to a nearby strip bar, The Gentlemen’s Club at around 1am local time. The Gentlemen’s Club was subsequently evacuated, Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Four other commercial businesses are known to have been affected after LAPD completely shut down the Atwater Village area.

US railroad oil spills in 2013 surpassed previous four decades combined

Newly unveiled federal data indicates that more crude oil was spilled in US railway incidents in 2013 than in the prior 37 years combined, inspiring lawmakers to push for new safety standards that could avoid similarly devastating incidents in the future.

Altogether, 800,000 gallons spilled from US railroads in the years from 1975 to 2010. That data, which comes from the Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration, does not include records of Canadian spills, some of which are thought to surpass one million gallons spilled on their own.

In part because of major derailments in Alabama and North Dakota, over 1.15 million gallons of crude oil seeped from train cars.

North Dakota crude, the type of oil examined in the government research, tends to have very low density, which means it is made of more volatile compounds that could increase its flammability and make the crude more difficult to clean up.

A single rail car contains approximately 28,800 gallons of oil. According to McClatchy newspapers, 400,000 carloads – over 11.5 billion gallons – were shipped across the continent in 2013. That is an astounding success rate of 99.99 percent, although the spills that did occur were problematic enough to make international headlines.

March 28 (Reuters) – Recovery efforts were underway on Thursday to clean up an oil spill in western Minnesota a day after a mile-long Canadian Pacific Railway train derailed, rupturing three tankers and leaking around 15,000 gallons of fuel.

The cleanup was expected to take another day or two, officials said, after 11 cars on a 94-car train heading for the Chicago area left the tracks on Wednesday about 150 miles northwest of Minneapolis near the town of Parkers Prairie.

The spill came as a debate rages over the environmental risks of transporting Alberta tar sands crude from Canada across the border. This was the first spill since the start of a boom in North American crude-by-rail transport began three years ago.

The amount of oil estimated to have spilled into a nearby ditch and field was less than the 20,000 to 30,000 gallons originally estimated, Minnesota officials said, though freezing temperatures were hampering efforts to draw up the loose fuel.

“Only about 1,000 gallons has been recovered,” said Dan Olson, spokesman for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. “The remaining oil on the ground has thickened into a heavy tar-like consistency.”

It was not yet clear if the crude was from the Alberta tar sands or from conventional oil fields.

Canadian Pacific reopened the rail line in western Minnesota, it said on Thursday, following full track repairs and inspections, said Canadian Pacific spokesman Ed Greenberg.

An investigation into the cause of the derailment is ongoing, he said.

Meanwhile, the tar-like crude is being excavated into a lined trench and will be hauled away for disposal.

Canadian Pacific will use steam to heat the 11 derailed tanker cars so the oil they contain can be pumped out. This process is expected to take a few weeks, Olson said.

Red Butte Creek Spill, Utah – June 2010

In June 2010, a Chevron pipeline ruptured and spilled oil into a creek near Salt Lake City, Utah.

It was first estimated that over 17,000 to 21,000 gallons spilled into the creek, which leads into the Great Salt Lake, reported AP. Around 150 birds were “identified for rehabilitation.” The oil did not reach the Great Salt Lake, however.

Chevron was later cited for the spill, which released an estimated 33,000 gallons in total.

In March 2012, a group of 66 residents of a Salt Lake City neighborhood sued Chevron for damage caused by the Red Butte Creek spill and a smaller spill in December 2011.

About 900 gallons of oil that leaked from the Enbridge storage tank in unincorporated Mokena is being cleaned up today. The U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration is investigating the cause of the Nov. 20 equipment failure. According to a story posted at 11:48 a.m. today in the Chicago Tribune, the pipe line of crude oil that provides a supply between Mokena and Superior, Wis., incurred damage that was contained within the tank berm. Any environmental impact is suspected to have been minimal, said a U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration spokesperson.

BP Chicap Pipe Spilled Oil at Illinois Tank Farm, Filing Shows

BP Plc (BP/) shut down a system associated with its Chicap pipeline near Mokena, Illinois, yesterday after a spill.

Oil was discharged into a containment area and covered about 1,000 square feet inside a berm, according to a filing with the National Response Center. The incident occurred at a tank farm, the filing showed.

A separate filing with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency said an estimated 200 barrels of oil spilled from the line. The release was halted and a vacuum truck, tanks and other equipment were sent to the scene.

The Chicap Pipeline System includes a 360,000-barrel-a-day, 26-inch mainline from Patoka, Illinois, to the Mokena area. A 100,000-barrel-a-day, 16-inch lateral line runs from Mokena to Lemont, Illinois, according to the company’s website.

The Chicap line receives low sulfur and heavy crude from the Capline and Woodpat pipes, an Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) system in Patoka and an Enbridge Inc. (ENB) pipeline system in Mokena, the website showed.

U.S. companies must notify the response center if they release hazardous substances in excess of reportable quantities, according to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, commonly known as Superfund. Bloomberg News couldn’t immediately verify that the information in the NRC filing was accurate.
