Three people have been transported to a Lansing area hospital after the Parkwood YMCA in Haslett was evacuated this morning due to a liquid chlorine leak. Meridian Township Fire Inspector Mark Hornberger said a liquid chlorine leak of less than 20 gallons started about 9:45 a.m. in a mechanical room and fumes spread in the building. The three people taken to the hospital were experiencing respiratory problems, he said. Seven other people were evaluated but not transported. Officials are diluting the chlorine at the facility at 2306 Haslett Road as part of the cleanup process. YMCA officials were not immediately available for comment. I’s not clear when the facility will reopen.

Prinz referred all other questions to Tony Fragale, president and CEO at YMCA of Lansing.

Fragale said he was grateful for authorities’ quick response to the spill, which was less than 20 gallons.
