The seven ways to stop the NSA from gaining intel on you

You cannot swing a dead cat without hitting a news story about the National Security Administration (NSA) finding ways to glean information about your personal life. From learning your sexual proclivity to your bank’s PIN, they seem to have an animalistic hunger for your personal details.

The information I am giving you is life changing. It offers freedom where there is captivity. And, believe it or not, actually works!

#1 Get rid of your smart phone.

Your smart phone is the first way the NSA has its claws into you. From your location to your banking info, which any rogue NSA agent can sell (think Edward Snowden with gambling debts), your smart phone is a liability.

Changing to a simple cell phone means you can’t keep up to date with your Facebook buddies, but that’s okay. They don’t like you anyways. And the NSA may be able to track your phone calls and location despite your best efforts. This is one way you can keep the NSA and local law enforcement wondering where you’ve been.

Open the back of the cell phone and locate the GPS chip like these:

And apply a hot soldering iron to the center for a few seconds. Repeat a few times. That will damage the chip to the point of being unreliable or inoperative.

One GPS website, in 2009 stated:

“This type of technology would also make these GPS tracking chips for children too. In fact, it would probably enable a future society to be able to know the exact location of every person in the world at the exact same time! If I wanted to get all 1984-esque, if there was a small microphone on the cell phone component then you would know where everyone in the world was and what they were talking about at any given moment. Now that would be something.”

They had no idea how accurate they were in their prognostication, however, the NSA was in full swing of knowing where people were by the GPS chips in their cell phones.

#2 Delete your Facebook Account

Actually, get rid of all your social media accounts. Facebook is losing more followers than President Obama, and Twitter is REALLY overpriced for the value they hold. If you must use social media – limit it to work issues only, such as current sales and special offers. Private information should stay private. No one, including the NSA, needs to know of problems in your personal life. Save that for #5 and $6.

US bill requires smart phone ‘kill switch’

TWO US officials have announced plans to introduce legislation requiring smart phones to have a “kill switch” that would render stolen or lost devices inoperable.

California State Senator Mark Leno and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon announced on Thursday that the bill they believe will be the first of its kind in the United States will be formally introduced in January.

US law enforcement officials have been demanding that manufacturers create kill switches to combat surging smart phone theft across the country.

“One of the top catalysts for street crime in many California cities is smart phone theft, and these crimes are becoming increasingly violent,” Leno said.

“We cannot continue to ignore our ability to utilise existing technology to stop cellphone thieves in their tracks…”

Almost one in three US robberies involve phone theft, according to the Federal Communications Commission.

Lost and stolen mobile devices – mostly smart phones – cost consumers more than $US30 billion ($A33.98 billion) last year, according to a study.

A California senator plans to introduce a new bill that would require smartphones to enable a “kill switch,” a security feature that would make a phone inoperable if it’s stolen.

Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) announced Thursday that he will introduce the bill at the start of the 2014 legislative session in January, with the support of San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón.

“One of the top catalysts for street crime in many California cities is smartphone theft, and these crimes are becoming increasingly violent,” Leno said in a press release. “We cannot continue to ignore our ability to utilize existing technology to stop cell phone thieves in their tracks. It is time to act on this serious public safety threat to our communities.”

Blackberry to cut 4,500 jobs amid earnings plunge

The BBC’s Michelle Fleury says Blackberry “was once a pioneer” in the smart phone field

Blackberry has announced it is planning to cut 4,500 jobs, or 40% of its worldwide workforce, in an attempt to staunch huge losses.

The smartphone maker said it anticipated a loss of as much as $995m (£621m) when it reports its second-quarter earnings next week.

Shares in the firm closed down 17% after briefly being halted following the announcement.

In August, the Canadian company said it was evaluating a possible sale.

In a statement on Friday, Blackberry’s chief executive Thorsten Heins said: “We are implementing the difficult, but necessary operational changes announced today to address our position in a maturing and more competitive industry, and to drive the company toward profitability.”

“Going forward, we plan to refocus our offering on our end-to-end solution of hardware, software and services for enterprises and the productive, professional end user.”

‘Off a cliff’

The company said the losses were primarily attributable to disappointing sales of its new Z10 model smartphone.

Released in January to much fanfare after many delays, the phone has failed to enthuse consumers.

The economic outlook keeps degenerating with Blackberry cutting 4,500 jobs, and with Intel closing a manufacturing plant in Hudson, Massachusetts, resulting in 700 jobs lost.[1][2]

Although the Information Technology sector of the global economy has been doing well overall, restructuring and new technologies have effected some business models more than others. The IT Security and Storage sectors are poised for tremendous growth.

In the case of Blackberry, the technology has been under immense scrutiny for its not keeping up with the vast majority of what people want in their communication devices. Even though the U.S. government has only certified Blackberry for government use, this did not avert the job cuts.[3][4]

Soon afterward, in the article ‘U.S. and U.K. spies crack BlackBerry BES Encryption, report says’ by computerworld.com, Blackberry BES Encryption was compromised. Once again, the NSA is a global threat to privacy and corporate security.[5]
