18.03.2013 Power Outage Solomon Islands Temotu Province, [Province-wide] Damage level
Details

Power Outage in Solomon Islands on Monday, 18 March, 2013 at 11:14 (11:14 AM) UTC.

Description
People are still living under temporary shelter without access to water or toilets in the capital of Solomon Islands’ Temotu province almost six weeks after the region was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami. The premier, Father Charles Brown Beu, says more than 100 people who lost their homes are under tents or tarpaulins next to the Lata soccer field, many of them from other islands in the province. He says he needs to know what the plan is for those people. “Where would people go and so on. The sea is too far from here. One of my major concerns now is there are no toilets in those camps. And stronger ones still go down to the seaside which is about almost, almost 20, 30 minutes’ walk from the huts, temporary shelter, to the sea.” Father Charles Brown Beu says one option is for people to move back to their seaside land but they need reassurance from a geological expert that they will be safe.

SIEA explains power outages

Tuesday, 20 September 2011 09:31

SOLOMON Islands Electricity Authority (SIEA) yesterday explained the power outages experienced on Sunday and yesterday.
In a statement SIEA said it regrets the load shedding that has occurred over the last two days.

“This was a result of unexpected power outages caused by one of the generators.

“This came as a result of a problem with the Automatic Voltage Unit (AVU) that controls the supply of power coming from the generators onto the grid.”

SIEA said the AVU on one of the main generators, Watsila Gen set L7 has been experiencing outages over the last two days and as a result it had to be shut down a number of times.

Yesterday workers chose to shut down the L7 to allow electricians to work on a temporary fix to the issue.

“Replacement parts for the AVU are now on order.

“The issue with the AVU was that it normally controls to regulate load, but it was not responding and supply was inconsistent.

“Therefore a decision  to avoid any further complications was put in place, which was to shut down the system entirely for the period of time needed to fix this.

“Workers are now waiting to see whether they have successfully remedied the problem for the short term,” the statement said.

Power was believed to have returned yesterday afternoon barring further unexpected complications.

“Apologies are sincerely extended to the public and the industries affected by the power outages,” the company said.

Tectonic Summary

Seismotectonics of the Eastern Margin of the Australia Plate

The eastern margin of the Australia plate is one of the most sesimically active areas of the world due to high rates of convergence between the Australia and Pacific plates. In the region of New Zealand, the 3000 km long Australia-Pacific plate boundary extends from south of Macquarie Island to the southern Kermadec Island chain. It includes an oceanic transform (the Macquarie Ridge), two oppositely verging subduction zones (Puysegur and Hikurangi), and a transpressive continental transform, the Alpine Fault through South Island, New Zealand.

Since 1900 there have been 15 M7.5+ earthquakes recorded near New Zealand. Nine of these, and the four largest, occurred along or near the Macquarie Ridge, including the 1989 M8.2 event on the ridge itself, and the 2004 M8.1 event 200 km to the west of the plate boundary, reflecting intraplate deformation. The largest recorded earthquake in New Zealand itself was the 1931 M7.8 Hawke’s Bay earthquake, which killed 256 people. The last M7.5+ earthquake along the Alpine Fault was 170 years ago; studies of the faults’ strain accumulation suggest that similar events are likely to occur again.

Aftershocks rattle Solomon Islands

Posted Mon Feb 11, 2013 8:51am AEDT

A third powerful aftershock rattled Solomon Islands early this morning, as aid agencies struggled to assess the devastation five days after a magnitude 8.0 quake triggered a deadly tsunami.

The confirmed death toll rose to 10 with the discovery of a child’s body in a ditch in the remote Santa Cruz Islands on Sunday, while more than 3,000 people are squatting in shelters after their homes were destroyed.

Two boats carrying urgently needed supplies of medicine, food, water and tents have arrived at Lata, the main town in the island group, but the fragile communications system meant further shipments were on hold.

Officials in the capital Honiara said they had not been able to receive full assessments of the situation in the outlying islands.

“At the moment we don’t know if we are still in the relief stage or have moved to the recovery stage,” Red Cross secretary general for the Solomon Islands, Joanne Zoleveke, told AFP.

“We don’t know if what we have sent is sufficient or if more is required and we have to charter more boats.

Powerful aftershock rattles Solomon Islands

A powerful aftershock rattled the Solomon Islands on Sunday as aid agencies struggled to get a clear picture of the devastation four days after a 8.0-magnitude quake triggered a deadly tsunami.

The confirmed death toll rose to 10 with the discovery of a child’s body in a ditch in the remote Santa Cruz Islands, while more than 3,000 people are squatting in shelters after their homes were destroyed.

We can’t make those decisions until we receive assessment reports from Lata and communications are intermittent.”

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake which rocked the region early Sunday was centred just 29 kilometres (18 miles) south-southwest of Lata at a depth of 18 kilometres, and followed a 7.0 aftershock late Friday night.

The Solomon Islands government has declared the Santa Cruz Islands a disaster area. Aerial surveys indicate most of the damage is confined to the Lata region.

It was estimated about 590 houses had been destroyed, with most of the destruction caused in the initial earthquake on Wednesday and the metre-high tsunami which swept through coastal villages soon after.

Initial reports put the death toll at 13, but Zoleveke said the intermittent communications with Lata indicated it was not that high.

“The official death toll is now 10 as of last night. The body of a child was found in a ditch,” she said.

Solomons declares state of disaster after quake

Updated at 6:04 am on 9 February 2013

Radio New Zealand

More than 3000 people are without shelter in the quake and tsunami-hit Santa Cruz island group in Solomon Islands, as significant aftershocks continue.

The death toll has risen to 10 with the discovery of a child’s body in a ditch near Lata airfield, with at least five more people missing.

The Solomons government has declared a state of disaster with officials saying damage on the main island, Ndende, is much worse than first thought, with up to 20 villages swamped in a tsunami generated by the quake.

The premier of Temotu province, Charles Brown Beu, says the number of homeless is expected to grow as rescuers reach more remote areas.

Father Brown Beu said people fled again to higher ground after a 6.7 tremor on Friday morning, the largest following Wednesday’s 8.0-magnitude earthquake.

He says people need food and water, and most urgently, waterproof shelters.

The aftershocks meant a plane with supplies and medical staff couldn’t land and was forced to return to Honiara.

Capital’s residents camping out

Radio New Zealand International‘s correspondent says heavy rain is expected, increasing the urgency for shelter and fears of pneumonia for the vulnerable but at least providing some drinking water.

He says people from the provincial capital Lata are camping along the main road of the Santa Cruz plateau, possibly for up to a week until the situation calms down.

The hospital has been evacuated to an outdoor clinic with some patients having intravenous drips strung up in trees.

Red Cross relief workers with supplies are expected to arrive on a government patrol boat from Honiara on Friday night.

Red Cross secretary general general Joanne Zoleveke said there are widespread areas that no one has reached following the disaster.

“We’re sending a 15-member team to Lata. We’re relocating our operations centre there because we feel that the situation is grave and the devastation is more widely spread than we think it is.”

She said only half of the main island in the Santa Cruz group has been covered so far and most of the outer islands remain isolated.
