Mars to get planetary ring set to rival Saturn, with moon Phobos set to break up from tidal stress

Mars is destined to get a spectacular new planetary ring system to rival that of Saturn, but don’t hold your breath because it will not be for another 30 million years or so, according to scientists.

The findings, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, are based on a new study to determine the fate destined to befall the diminutive Martian moon Phobos.

Over time Phobos is creeping inwards towards Mars at a couple of centimetres per year.

“We found that Phobos is too weak to withstand tidal stresses from Mars and we expect it to break apart in a few tens of millions of years and form a ring around Mars,” the study’s lead author Dr Benjamin Black of the University of California said.

Only the giant planets of the outer solar system have rings at the moment.

Phobos — the larger of the two moons circling Mars — orbits just 6,000 kilometres above the surface of the red planet, closer than any other moon in the solar system.

“Over time Phobos is creeping inwards towards Mars at a couple of centimetres per year,” Dr Black said.

“We wanted to figure out whether Phobos crashes into Mars or breaks apart to form a ring, so we needed to know how strong it was — is it going to be able to stand the increasing tidal stresses that are going to be pulling this little moon apart, or will it eventually succumb to these forces?”

Dr Black and co-author Tushar Mittal found that Phobos will be pulled apart by the red planet’s gravitational tidal forces in about 20 to 40 million years’ time.

“We concluded that Phobos would break apart between 2.4 and about 1.1 Mars radii, somewhere between 8,500 kilometres down to around 4,000 kilometres or so,” Dr Black said.

Eaten away by ‘vog’: Acid fog eroding rocks on Mars

Scientists believe they have figured out why rocks on Mars are eroding. They say an acidic fog created by volcanic eruptions on the red planet is the probable culprit.

Planetary scientist Shoshanna Cole came up with the theory after studying a 100-acre area on Husband Hill in the Columbia Hills of the Gusev Crater on Mars using data gathered by a number of instruments on the 2003 Mars Exploration Rover Spirit.

She found that acidic vapors released by eruptions may have been responsible for eating away rocks on the Watchtower Class outcrops on the Cumberland Ridge and Husband Hill summit.

“The special thing about Watchtower Class is that it’s very widespread and we see it in different locations. As far as we can tell, it is part of the ground there,” which means that these rocks record environments that existed on Mars billions of years ago, Cole said in a press release submitted by the Geological Society of America.

Organic Ejecta –Clues to Violent Events in the History of the Universe

Exploding stars, random impacts involving comets and meteorites, and even near misses between two bodies can create regions of great heat and high pressure. Researchers from Imperial College London have now developed a method for analysing the pressure experienced by tiny samples of organic material that may have been ejected from dying stars before making a long journey through the cosmos. The researchers have investigated a type of aromatic hydrocarbon called dimethylnaphthalene, which should enable them to identify violent events in the history of the universe.

The team also believe that their new technique could be applied on Mars, potentially using the existing technology on-board roving laboratories such as the one on the Mars Science Laboratory Mission to glean information about sources of organic matter on the red planet. Recognising the pressures recorded in the aromatic hydrocarbons can help to reveal whether it came from processes generated from ancient living organisms.Samples of dimethylnaphthalene are found in meteorites. Previously, scientists have only had the ability to investigate how they have been affected by heat. The Imperial researchers say their method for detecting periods when dimethylnaphthalenes have experienced high pressure will now allow for a much more comprehensive analysis of organic materials.

Martian settlement site to be printed on a printer

The first human settlers on Mars will use a 3D printer to print dwellings, greenhouses and even cutlery, in short, all they will need to live on the Red Planet. In the process, they will use the raw materials that are available over there. The Inspiration Mars Foundation noncommercial organization has shared plans to that end.

But experts point out that one shouldn’t overestimate the potential of 3D printers. The Mars Van Company, as well as the founder of SpaceX, or Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, Elon Musk, are also going to build colonial settlements on Mars in the next 10 to 20 years.

3D printers may come in handy in terrestrials’ settling on Mars. Inspiration Mars Foundation says it will use them to print all that the first settlers may require, including residential homes and interior items. These will be made of three types of plastic, namely polyethylene, polyester and epoxy-resin.

To obtain them, one will need oxygen and methane. Mars Foundation experts claim they know how to get the materials in question outside the Earth. The first settlers will also need fiberglass and cement, and they will make them from the sand that Mars is covered in. As the settlers build and make operational their greenhouse, they will also use potato starch in the printing process.

But they will hardly manage to print big-size parts, so they will have to bring along a laser cutter to cut the “printed” plastic sheets, to stick together structures of any size. The pioneers will have to print even their food; – the printer will mix up special-purpose powders with water so the dish would look like and have a taste of omelet or bacon, for example.

The idea of building this kind of settlement on Mars is feasible, but will call for mindboggling investments, feels a News of Cosmonautics magazine observer, Igor Lisov.

“Building a colonial settlement on Mars is feasible, as long as one is prepared to pay 100 billion dollars or more”.

But some experts point out that if the colonists choose to stay on Mars for good and will not have to be brought back to the Earth, the project will cost less. This is precisely the assumption that Mars Van, Elon Musk and Mars Foundation proceed from. This will help save money. Also, a one-way space rocket with an expedition on board may prove lighter.

The original prime equipment cargo with the first colonists will exceed the Curiositymoon rover weight by a factor of ten. This will also depend on the progress that researchers have made in waste processing before the expedition blasts off. The Martian project will spur technological development on the Earth, says a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Cosmonautics, named after Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Andrei Ionin.

“All technologies, namely 3D printers, waste recycling systems, the biotechnologies that help man survive in extreme conditions are effectively commercialized on earth. The money invested will be returned quite soon, for this is the idea of a one-way Martian project. Creating technologies of great commercial potential on the Earth will help carry out the project with the minimum government funding”.

Still, it will take a lot more than 10 years or 20 years to build Martian bases using printers. Such printers are still in “swaddling clothes”, says a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Cosmonautics named after Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Yuri Karash.

“When I first heard about the plans to use printers to print a base on another planet, I thought of the development of helicopters in the early 1950s. It was held then that a helicopter would eventually become very much like a bicycle, that any family would be able to buy a helicopter for a car price to fly to a shop, to a movie theatre or a park, to stroll there. There used to be similar plans for nuclear energy. It was held once that people would have nuclear-powered aircraft, cars and even wrist watches. But this is still not the case. What may seem easy enough on paper or in a lab may prove pretty difficult to achieve in practice”.

A 3D printer is a machine tool that virtually prints parts from plastic or other materials in keeping with the parameters indicated in a special drawing file. Next year, this kind of printer is due to be tested on board the International Space Station for the first time.

Space Cadets line up for one-way Mars trip

More than 200,000 people from 140 countries have applied to go to Mars and never return, the group behind an ambitious venture to colonize the inhospitable red planet said Monday.

Bas Lansdorp, a Dutch engineer and entrepreneur, plans to establish a permanent base on Mars in a mission he hopes will take off in 2022 if he can find the necessary $6 billion.

One in four of the 202,586 applicants for the one-way trip are Americans, said Mars One, the non-profit group which initiated its hunt for “would-be Mars settlers” in April.

There are also hopefuls from India (10 percent), China (six percent) and Brazil (five percent), among other countries, it said.

By 2015, Mars One expects put up to 10 four-member teams through intensive training, with the first of those teams reaching to Mars in 2023 on a high-risk journey that would take seven months to complete.

A comet is heading for Mars, and there is a chance that it might hit the Red Planet in October 2014.  An impact wouldn’t necessarily mean the end of NASA’s Mars program. But it would transform the program along with Mars itself.

Quake Hits Southern Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted the town of Ahal in Fars province, Southern Iran, on Thursday.

The Seismological center of Fars province affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University registered the quake at 06:27 hours local time (0157 GMT).

The epicenter of the quake was located in an area 53.8 degrees in longitude and 26.9 degrees in latitude.

There are yet no reports on the number of possible casualties or damage to properties by the quake.

Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth’s crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.

The worst in recent times hit Bam in southeastern Kerman province in December 2003, killing 31,000 people – about a quarter of its population – and destroying the city’s ancient mud-built citadel.

The deadliest quake in the country was in June 1990 and measured 7.7 on the Richter scale. About 37,000 people were killed and more than 100,000 injured in the northwestern provinces of Gilan and Zanjan. It devastated 27 towns and about 1,870 villages.

Last month, two quakes in Northwestern Iran also claimed the lives of 306 people and injured more than 4500 others.

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted Ahar in East Azerbaijan province at 16:00 hours local time (1130GMT) on August 11. The epicenter of the quake was located in an area 46.8 degrees in longitude and 38.4 degrees in latitude.

Almost an hour later another quake with magnitude 6 on the Richter scale jolted Varzaqan at 17:04 hours local time (1234GMT) in the same province. The epicenter of the quake was located in an area 46.7 degrees in longitude and 38.4 degrees in latitude.

Tectonic Summary

The September 5th 2012 M 7.6 earthquake beneath the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica, occurred as the result of thrust faulting on or near the subduction zone interface between the Cocos and Caribbean plates. At the latitude of this earthquake, the Cocos plate moves north-northeast with respect to the Caribbean plate at a velocity of approximately 77 mm/yr, and subducts beneath Central America at the Middle America Trench.

Over the past 40 years, the region within 250 km of the September 5th earthquake has experienced approximately 30 earthquakes with M 6 or greater; two of these were larger than M 7, and neither caused documented fatalities. The first was a M 7.2 in August of 1978, 9 km to the north-northeast of the September 5th 2012 event; the second had a magnitude of M 7.3, and struck a region just over 50 km to the east-southeast in March 1990. The earthquake of October 5, 1950, M 7.8, occurred in the general area of the September 5th 2012 earthquake, although the hypocenter of the earlier earthquake is not known to high precision. The 1950 earthquake caused damage in northwestern Costa Rica and in the Valle Central of Costa Rica, but no reported casualties. The closest earthquake to cause fatalities in recent history was the M 6.5 April 1973 earthquake approximately 80 km to the northeast, which resulted in 26 fatalities and over 100 injuries.

Seismotectonics of the Caribbean Region and Vicinity

Extensive diversity and complexity of tectonic regimes characterizes the perimeter of the Caribbean plate, involving no fewer than four major plates (North America, South America, Nazca, and Cocos). Inclined zones of deep earthquakes (Wadati-Benioff zones), ocean trenches, and arcs of volcanoes clearly indicate subduction of oceanic lithosphere along the Central American and Atlantic Ocean margins of the Caribbean plate, while crustal seismicity in Guatemala, northern Venezuela, and the Cayman Ridge and Cayman Trench indicate transform fault and pull-apart basin tectonics.

Along the northern margin of the Caribbean plate, the North America plate moves westwards with respect to the Caribbean plate at a velocity of approximately 20 mm/yr. Motion is accommodated along several major transform faults that extend eastward from Isla de Roatan to Haiti, including the Swan Island Fault and the Oriente Fault. These faults represent the southern and northern boundaries of the Cayman Trench. Further east, from the Dominican Republic to the Island of Barbuda, relative motion between the North America plate and the Caribbean plate becomes increasingly complex and is partially accommodated by nearly arc-parallel subduction of the North America plate beneath the Caribbean plate. This results in the formation of the deep Puerto Rico Trench and a zone of intermediate focus earthquakes (70-300 km depth) within the subducted slab. Although the Puerto Rico subduction zone is thought to be capable of generating a megathrust earthquake, there have been no such events in the past century. The last probable interplate (thrust fault) event here occurred on May 2, 1787 and was widely felt throughout the island with documented destruction across the entire northern coast, including Arecibo and San Juan. Since 1900, the two largest earthquakes to occur in this region were the August 4, 1946 M8.0 Samana earthquake in northeastern Hispaniola and the July 29, 1943 M7.6 Mona Passage earthquake, both of which were shallow thrust fault earthquakes. A significant portion of the motion between the North America plate and the Caribbean plate in this region is accommodated by a series of left-lateral strike-slip faults that bisect the island of Hispaniola, notably the Septentrional Fault in the north and the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault in the south. Activity adjacent to the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault system is best documented by the devastating January 12, 2010 M7.0 Haiti strike-slip earthquake, its associated aftershocks and a comparable earthquake in 1770.

Moving east and south, the plate boundary curves around Puerto Rico and the northern Lesser Antilles where the plate motion vector of the Caribbean plate relative to the North and South America plates is less oblique, resulting in active island-arc tectonics. Here, the North and South America plates subduct towards the west beneath the Caribbean plate along the Lesser Antilles Trench at rates of approximately 20 mm/yr. As a result of this subduction, there exists both intermediate focus earthquakes within the subducted plates and a chain of active volcanoes along the island arc. Although the Lesser Antilles is considered one of the most seismically active regions in the Caribbean, few of these events have been greater than M7.0 over the past century. The island of Guadeloupe was the site of one of the largest megathrust earthquakes to occur in this region on February 8, 1843, with a suggested magnitude greater than 8.0. The largest recent intermediate-depth earthquake to occur along the Lesser Antilles arc was the November 29, 2007 M7.4 Martinique earthquake northwest of Fort-De-France.

The southern Caribbean plate boundary with the South America plate strikes east-west across Trinidad and western Venezuela at a relative rate of approximately 20 mm/yr. This boundary is characterized by major transform faults, including the Central Range Fault and the Bocon?-San Sebastian-El Pilar Faults, and shallow seismicity. Since 1900, the largest earthquakes to occur in this region were the October 29, 1900 M7.7 Caracas earthquake, and the July 29, 1967 M6.5 earthquake near this same region. Further to the west, a broad zone of compressive deformation trends southwestward across western Venezuela and central Columbia. The plate boundary is not well defined across northwestern South America, but deformation transitions from being dominated by Caribbean/South America convergence in the east to Nazca/South America convergence in the west. The transition zone between subduction on the eastern and western margins of the Caribbean plate is characterized by diffuse seismicity involving low- to intermediate-magnitude (M<6.0) earthquakes of shallow to intermediate depth.

The plate boundary offshore of Colombia is also characterized by convergence, where the Nazca plate subducts beneath South America towards the east at a rate of approximately 65 mm/yr. The January 31, 1906 M8.5 earthquake occurred on the shallowly dipping megathrust interface of this plate boundary segment. Along the western coast of Central America, the Cocos plate subducts towards the east beneath the Caribbean plate at the Middle America Trench. Convergence rates vary between 72-81 mm/yr, decreasing towards the north. This subduction results in relatively high rates of seismicity and a chain of numerous active volcanoes; intermediate-focus earthquakes occur within the subducted Cocos plate to depths of nearly 300 km. Since 1900, there have been many moderately sized intermediate-depth earthquakes in this region, including the September 7, 1915 M7.4 El Salvador and the October 5, 1950 M7.8 Costa Rica events.

The boundary between the Cocos and Nazca plates is characterized by a series of north-south trending transform faults and east-west trending spreading centers. The largest and most seismically active of these transform boundaries is the Panama Fracture Zone. The Panama Fracture Zone terminates in the south at the Galapagos rift zone and in the north at the Middle America trench, where it forms part of the Cocos-Nazca-Caribbean triple junction. Earthquakes along the Panama Fracture Zone are generally shallow, low- to intermediate in magnitude (M<7.2) and are characteristically right-lateral strike-slip faulting earthquakes. Since 1900, the largest earthquake to occur along the Panama Fracture Zone was the July 26, 1962 M7.2 earthquake.

A preliminary review revealed some structural damage near the epicenter, but no reports of deaths or injuries, said Douglas Salgado, a geographer with Costa Rica’s National Commission of Risk Prevention and Emergency Attention. He said a tsunami alert had been called off for Costa Rica. The review also uncovered a landslide on the main highway that connects the capital of San Jose to the Pacific coast city of Puntarenas, Salgado said. Hotels and other structures suffered cracks in walls and saw items knocked off shelves. “There’s chaos in San Jose because it was a strong earthquake of long duration,” Salgado said. “It was pretty strong and caused collective chaos.” Michelle Landwer, owner of the Belvedere Hotel in Samara, north of the epicenter, said she was having breakfast with about 10 people when the earthquake struck. “The whole building was moving, I couldn’t even walk,” Landwer said. “Here in my building there was no real damage. Everything was falling, like glasses and everything.” At the Hotel Punta Islita in the Guanacaste area, “everybody is crying a lot and the telephone lines are saturated,” said worker Diana Salas, speaking by telephone, but she said was no damage there. In the coastal town of Nosara, roughly 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of the epicenter, trees shook violently and light posts swayed. Teachers chased primary school students outside as the quake hit. Roads cracked and power lines fell to the ground. A tsunami warning was in effect for Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin. It said it was unknown if a tsunami was generated, but the warning was based on the size of the earthquake.

Three people, two from heart attacks, when a major earthquake hit northwestern Costa Rica on Wednesday, authorities said. At least 20 people were injured and two others were missing, but the Red Cross said those numbers could rise as damage assessment teams reached more areas. Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla, however, said there were no deaths caused by the earthquake, contradicting the Red Cross. The quake — initially rated at magnitude 7.9 but then revised by the the U.S. Geological Survey to 7.6 — struck at 10:42 a.m. ET at a depth of about 25 miles about 7 miles southeast of Nicoya. The town of 15,000 people is near the Pacific coast, about 90 miles from the capital, San Jose. Government buildings, including the National Assembly complex in San Jose, were under evacuation orders, the newspaper La Nacion reported. Thousands of youngsters were sent home from school as a precaution against aftershocks. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center canceled tsunami warnings for Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua.A man died in Nicoya when a wall fell on him, said Vanessa Rosales, president of the National Emergency Commission. He wasn’t immediately identified. A second person, identified only as an elderly man named Smith, died of a heart attack in San Antonio in Desamparados province, authorities said. A woman from the Pacific coastal town of Carrillo also died from a heart attack during the quake, Eva Camargo, director of the hospital in Filadelfia, told the news service Terra. The woman was about 55 years old and had the surnames Rodriguez Machado. Camargo said the hospital was treating at least 20 people for quake-related injuries. Two other people suffered minor injuries at the Hotel Barceló Tambor Beach in Playa Tambor, said Alcides Gonzalez, mayor of the coastal town of Paquera. The nature of their injuries wasn’t immediately known, but Gonzalez told La Nacion that the resort hotel was damaged when a pipe collapsed. It couldn’t be immediately determined whether the victims were tourists or hotel employees. Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla Miranda met with the National Emergency Council and the International Committee of the Red Cross later in the morning. In a news conference monitored by NBC News, Chinchilla confirmed that several buildings had been damaged in the capital and called on residents of the western coast to remain calm.Power was out in Puntarenas, capital of the province of the same name, where Monsignor Sanabria Hospital was evacuated for a structural review amid visible signs of damage. A bridge over the Sucio River collapsed in the town of Sarapiqui, local media reported. Some roads were blocked by landslides, and the Red Cross said rescue teams were unable to reach some areas.

A powerful earthquake rocked Costa Rica on Wednesday, causing the deaths of at least two people, damaging buildings, and briefly triggering a tsunami warning. Unconfirmed media reports of people being treated for injuries. A spokesman for the local Red Cross said two people died during the earthquake, one from a heart attack. He was not immediately able to confirm media reports the other person had been crushed under a collapsing wall. The center had earlier warned of tsunamis for as far afield as Mexico and Peru. The quake’s epicenter was in western Costa Rica about 87 miles (140 km) from San Jose, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said, and it was felt as far away as Nicaragua and Panama. The Guanacaste region around the epicenter is known for its beaches, surf and volcanoes.

Clouds of volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau, or child of Krakatau, have become so prominent in recent days that Indonesian authorities have issued a warning for local residents and tourists. “The ash was carried by wind from the southeast to the south, reaching Bandarlampung,” Nurhuda, head of the observation and information section of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Lampung province told state news agency Antara. The major population center of Bandarlampung is the capital of the Lampung province and is the same distance from the volcano as the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. “We also advise fishermen and tourists not to come within a radius of 3 kilometers of Anak Krakatau. The thick plumes of smoke sent off by Krakatau contain toxic material that is hazardous for your health,” said Andi Suhardi, head of the Anak Krakatau observation post in Hargo Pancuran village. Officials advised residents to wear masks when traveling outdoors to protect themselves against the ash. Short term effects of volcanic ash could include respiratory discomfort, including nose and throat irritation. Those with pre-existing respiratory conditions could be susceptible to more long term effects.In addition to having negative effects on the human population, volcanic ash has also been proven to be harmful to livestock. The ash has been observed causing cosmetic damage, such as abrasion of the teeth, as well as more dire impacts like fluorine poisoning from the heightened levels of hydrogen fluoride found in volcanic debris. Following the 1995 Mount Ruapehu eruptions in New Zealand, two thousand sheep died after being affected by fluorosis while grazing on land littered with the ash. The added weight of ash in the animals’ wool also led to widespread fatigue affecting the flocks. Observations of Anak Krakatau could be hinting toward a major eruption as the volcanology office in Bandung has recorded almost 90 eruptions per day over the past week. In addition, Nurhuda added that the volcano has been observed spewing red hot lava up almost 1000 feet above its peak in recent days. A major eruption of the tiny island volcano would be the first one for Indonesia since the eruption of Mount Merapi. In October 2010, the Indonesian government sounded the alarm regarding Mount Merapi and warned villagers in threatened areas to move to safe areas. The evacuation orders affected at least 19,000 people, but by the time volcanic activity had subsided, over 350,000 people were displaced.The eruptions would eventually claim the lives of 353 people with a number of victims succumbing to severe burns and some bodies being found on the volcano’s slopes. The mountain continued to erupt until November 2010 and on December 3rd the official alert status was reduced to level 3, from level 4, the highest possible level. After the eruptions at Mount Merapi subsided, officials declared them the worst the country had seen since the 1870s. In addition to death, damage and displacement, the volcanic activity also disrupted air travel, grounding flights from Indonesia and Australia for over a month.

The Fuego volcano in central Guatemala is continuing to erupt, shooting lava and columns of ash into the air, and causing concerns of a possible ash cloud that could halt flights in the area. The volcano overlooks the tourist city of Antigua and is one of central America’s most active volcanoes. Lava flows of around 1000m are being spewed out down the west and east sides of the volcano. No evacuations have been ordered, but aviation authorities have been alerted about a potential ash cloud, and air traffic is expected to be hindered.

Severe weather watch after ‘amazing’ storm in Christchurch, New Zealand

A severe weather watch is in place for Canterbury today, after Christchurch was hit by freakish weather last night leaving conservatories damaged and lifting a roof off a house.

Emergency services in Christchurch were kept on their toes when lightning, thunder, rain and hail the size of golf balls hit the region shortly after 6pm. It finished just after 7pm.

MetService said that the weather watch covers the possibility of northwesterlies gusting to severe gale strength at times in inland parts of Canterbury, Otago and Southland from late Wednesday through Thursday.

The Fire Service received about 20 callouts during and after the storm last night, about damage to roofs and conservatories from the hail, but many were false alarms triggered by the weather.

“Two conservatories collapsed because of the hail, and we had to assist one family whose roof had begun to lift,” a Fire Service spokesman told NZ Newswire.

The spectacular show could be seen and heard over most of the city, with MetService reporting more than 200 lightning flashes during the storm.

Joy Hartley-Anderson commented on the ONE News Facebook page that the storm “was awesome”.

“Just something special for us from mother nature to mark the two year anniversary of shaking the crap out of us.. :-),” she posted.

On September 4, 2010, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook the ground beneath Christchurch more strongly than it had for thousands of years.

Flo Brown posted that the weather display was “amazing” and a “very special light display”.

However, Tania Ake said it was “pretty bad at Redwood” and freaked her out.

The storm caused a power outage in the Southbridge, but electricity company Orion managed to restore power to all but four customers.

The last time Canterbury had a hail storm of this size, there were a huge number of insurance claims for hail damage on vehicles.

Meanwhile, MetService said strong westerlies should remain over central New Zealand this morning.

The forecaster said westerlies could become severe gale strength at times in central Hawkes Bay and northern Wairarapa this morning.

A severe thunderstorm rumbled through the region Wednesday afternoon, knocking out power for more than 6,000 people in Jefferson County and causing temporary flooding of some Louisville streets. Lightning strikes from the storm caused two house fires in Jefferson County, said Jody Johnson Duncan, a spokeswoman for MetroSafe Communications. The fires, at 2201 Deveron Drive in Shively and 7007 Windham Parkway in Prospect, were reported between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. No injuries were reported from the fires. The storm also caused several blown electrical transformers and knocked down wires around the city, Johnson Duncan said. Two people had to be rescued from their vehicles after driving into high water at South 7th Street and Berry Boulevard. The Jefferson County Public Schools delayed releasing elementary students while the storm passed through, said Rick Caple, the transportation director. The weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the storm, which it said was capable of producing damaging winds of more than 60 mph. The Metropolitan Sewer District, which tracks rainfall closely at several monitors, said that the storm produced 1.25 inches of rain in about 30 minutes, with some areas getting up to a half inch in as little as five minutes. Water pressure from the storm blew the covers off about 10 manholes, but all MSD storm water and sewer facilities were operating after the storm, said MSD spokesman Steve Tedder. He said a few pumping stations used backup power. Several trees were reported down in Jeffersonville, the weather service said. A weather spotter also reported a large tree down on a railroad track in Anchorage and another person reported on Facebook that a small car was crushed at Woodbourne Avenue. More than 6,000 electric customers in Jefferson County were without service at 6 p.m., according to Louisville Gas & Electric. An overnight wind storm with gusts of over 100 miles an hour at high elevations knocked out power to at least half of Alaska’s largest city in the biggest outage in Anchorage’s center in decades, municipal and utility officials said on Wednesday. “It’s incredibly substantial. A huge proportion of Anchorage is affected,” said Dawn Brantley, emergency program manager for the Municipality of Anchorage. She said she did not know yet what percentage of the city overall had been affected but called the outage the biggest for downtown Anchorage in decades. Electricity was cut to at least half of Anchorage, including nearly all customers of the utility that serves the central part of the city, the officials said. Tens of thousands of homes and businesses remained without power by midday on Wednesday, Brantley said. Both of Anchorage’s electrical utilities, city-owned Municipal Light and Power and member-owned Chugach Electric Association, suffered outages. Power outages caused schools, local colleges and state offices to close on Wednesday. Access to Joint Base Elemendorf-Richardson was limited to essential workers. But municipal offices were open, Brantley said. The storm knocked down large trees and caused some property damage, but no storm-related injuries were reported, she said.

Portugal gets foreign help battling wildfires amid hot weather, wind and drought

LISBON, Portugal — Water-dumping aircraft from Spain and France on Tuesday joined Portugal’s battle to halt the spread of wildfires through thick woodland in the country’s north left tinder-dry by months of drought.Spain and France sent two aircraft each, Portugal’s Civil Protection Service said, a day after authorities appealed for help for fire crews struggling to contain blazes amid high temperatures and strong winds.

Leslie upgraded to a hurricane, on path towards Bermuda


Hurricane Leslie (NOAA) Tropical storm Leslie added 5 mph to its peak wind speed (up to 75 mph), becoming the 6th hurricane in the Atlantic in the 2012 season. It’s positioned 465 miles south-southeast of Bermuda and slowly headed in that direction. It may be in the island’s vicinity Saturday or Sunday.

The 6 hurricanes so far in 2012 matches the average number in an entire season slightly less than half way through. NOAA’s updated hurricane forecast called for 5-8 hurricanes, 2 to 3 of which would be major (category 3 or higher). So far, there have been no major hurricanes.

While forecasting hurricane intensity is highly uncertain, Leslie has the potential to strengthen into a major hurricane. By Saturday, the National Hurricane Center predicts its peak winds will be 110 mph – which is right at the major hurricane threshold (category 3 storms have maximum winds of at least 111 mph).

Tropics: Leslie and Michael strengthen, while Isaac may come back for an encore

The extremely active 2012 Atlantic hurricane season continues. Leslie and Michael are swirling in the open sea, while a piece of Isaac’s remnants might regenerate into tropical storm Nadine.


Model forecasts for tropical storm Leslie steer it towards Bermuda Saturday into SundayBermuda, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland need to be on-guard for possible impacts from Leslie. The northern Gulf Coast should keep an eye on the ghost of Isaac.

Leslie

In the past six days, Leslie has been in a moderate-to-high shear environment, limiting its intensity, but not dismantling it. Now, models are in fairly good agreement that the shear should subside and the storm will finally become a hurricane.

While the track remains far off the U.S. East Coast, Leslie could impact Bermuda later this weekend, and likely as a rather strong hurricane.

The latest suite of model runs keeps a tight cluster centered on the tiny island. At 11 a.m. this morning, Leslie’s maximum sustained winds were 70 mph; it was centered about 470 miles south-southeast of Bermuda and drifting north at 2mph. In the longer term, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland need to be on the lookout.

Michael


Michael formed on Monday afternoon as a depression, but was quickly upgraded to the 13th named storm of the season on Tuesday morning.

It’s a very small system, with tropical storm force winds extending just 35 miles from the center (recall Isaac’s typically extended about 200 miles from the center). It is very far from any land, but the best reference point would be the Azores islands, 1155 miles to the northeast.

Michael is a 50 mph tropical storm and is not forecast to change much in the coming days… perhaps gradually strengthening as it meanders generally northward.

Isaac/Nadine

Finally, in an unusual fashion, the remnants of Isaac may be making a comeback… over the northern Gulf coast!

Tracing the low-level circulation (850mb vorticity – area of spin about 5,000 feet aloft) over the past week reveals a complex history of what was once Hurricane Isaac. After moving inland across Louisiana, Arkansas, and Missouri, the circulation was distorted and ripped apart by a trough.


I simplified the events that transpired in the crude diagram shown here (to the right). Sometime around Monday, it appears that a part of the circulation split off to the northeast and a part split off to the south. This was not a clean separation, and someone else might analyze the circulation tracks slightly differently. But the basic point is that there is a disturbance re-entering the northern Gulf of Mexico that has some of Isaac in its “genes”. However, should this disturbance become a tropical storm, it would get a new name – Nadine – because there is not enough of Isaac’s circulation in its pedigree. As the National Hurricane Center described on its Facebook page:

There have been quite a few inquiries about whether the name “Isaac” would be given to the area of disturbed weather currently located along the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico, if it were to develop into a tropical cyclone. The short answer is no, it would get a new name.


As of this morning, the disturbance is certainly active and producing heavy rain (regional radar loop) across parts of LA, MS, AL, and FL, but the bulk of the thunderstorm activity is offshore. For the most part, model guidance suggests that it will continue to drift toward the Gulf, then get nudged back east toward northern Florida… making “landfall” this weekend. Even if it doesn’t get named or develop beyond what it is now, it should still be a big rain maker for the northeast Gulf coast over the next few days.

Seasonal update

As an update to my post on Friday regarding seasonal activity and Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE), as of 8 a.m. this morning, ACE stands at 66.3, compared to the average (1981-2010 base) 39.7 by the beginning of September 5 —- a whopping 167% of average for this date.

We’re also already on the 13th named storm as of September 4th, which isn’t a record, but it’s really close. The only years to beat that date are 2005 and 2011 when the 13th named storm formed on September 2nd. Since records began 160 years ago, only about 8% of years even reach the 13th named storm by the END of the season, let alone prior to the peak.

But, in terms of major hurricanes (Category 3+), this season is definitely lagging behind its peers. By this date in 2005, we already had three major hurricanes (Dennis, Emily, and Katrina), and by this date in 2011, we had one major hurricane (Katia). This year, we have had none.

The aftermath of Hurricane Isaac has washed ashore tens of thousands of dead “swamp rats,” invasive species whose rotting corpses are now presenting a health hazard in Mississippi.

The drowned rodents, known as nutria, are a stark reminder of the effects of hurricanes on wildlife, which can range from mass death to – surprisingly enough – dolphin baby booms. In the case of the nutria, the drownings may be a blessing for the Gulf Coast, where the beaver-like creatures wreck havoc on native marsh vegetation.

The clean-up, though, is proving unpleasant.

“They’re actually starting to swell up and bust,” Hancock County Supervisor David Yarborough told local news station WLOX. “It smells really bad.”

Animals and hurricanes

Nutria aren’t the only animals to suffer after hurricanes. A study of alligators in southwest Louisiana after Hurricane Rita hit in 2005 found that the reptiles were physically stressed a month after the initial storm surge inundated their marshy habitat. Blood tests on the gators showed elevated stress hormones as well as other signs of ill health, the researchers reported in February 2010 in the Journal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Ecological Genetics and Physiology.

Research on Florida manatees has suggested that docile “sea cows” die more frequently during years with extreme storms, perhaps due to immediate causes like getting swept out to sea, or perhaps due to post-hurricane environmental changes such as cooling in coastal waters, according to a 2006 paper published in the journal Estuaries and Coasts. That study tracked a handful of manatees through the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons and found that the animals tended to “ride out” the storms in place rather than attempt to avoid them.

Other studies have found changes in fish populations right after hurricanes, as well as changes in phytoplankton, the algal basis of the ocean food chain, though these changes are short-lived. Sometimes, though, hurricane effects echo over long time periods. A 2010 study on bottlenose dolphins found that two years after Hurricane Katrina, the number of baby dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico suddenly skyrocketed.

Some of the jump could be explained by dolphin mamas getting pregnant sooner than usual after losing their previous calves in the storm, the researchers reported in the journal Marine Mammal Science. But the storm had another effect: It destroyed a significant chunk of the Gulf of Mexico fishing fleet. Fewer fishermen meant more food for dolphins and their young, the researchers concluded.

Nutria death zone

Mississippi’s nutria population took a hit from Isaac. Sanitation workers have been cleaning up the carcasses with pitchforks and front-end loaders.

“Estimates are there will be over 20,000 carcasses, but that is unclear now,” Robbie Wilbur, a spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, told LiveScience. “Eventually, the totals will be numerated in tons when they’re all disposed.”

The carcasses are being sent to the Pecan Grove landfill in Harrison County, Miss., Wilbur added.

“It’s starting to get bad,” said Mark Williams of the Department of Environmental Quality’s Solid Waste Management branch. “It’s heated up over the last two or three days, and of course that really expedites the degradation process.”

Nutria are native to South America, but the rodents were brought to North America in the late 1800s and farmed for their fur. Escaped and released nutria established themselves in the marshes of the Gulf Coast, where they gnaw the roots of marsh plants, destroying the vegetal web that keeps the marshes from washing away.

Hurricane Isaac likely won’t set Mississippi’s nutria population back for long. Nutria can produce litters with as many as 13 babies, and they’re capable of reproducing twice a year starting at as early as four months of age. Baby nutria begin supplementing their mother’s milk with marsh vegetation within hours of birth.

Wild storm dumps torrential rain, hail on Perth, South-West Australia – more coming

Thousands of homes were without power across Perth this afternoon in the aftermath of a cold front that lashed the city today.

A Western Power spokeswoman said thousands of homes had without power at different times during the day, but the number was steadily decreasing.

Midland, Upper Swan and Pickering Brook were the worst affected areas.

Many home owners are tonight counting the cost of damage caused by the storm.

Nine News reports that a lightning strike caused a fire at a house in Bellevue caused more than $100,000 in damage, while wild winds brought down trees, including one in Forrestfield that crushed a car.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Meteorology warns that widespread damaging winds could tonight affect areas in a line south from Augusta to Lake Grace to Israelite Bay, including people in or near Bridgetown, Albany, Katanning and Esperance.

A deep low south of Bremer Bay will move eastwards during the evening, producing winds up to 100km/h which could result in damage to homes and property.

Dangerous gusts in excess of 125 km/h could cause significant damage or destruction to homes and property in localised areas.

Isolated thunderstorms and small hail is also possible.

The Bureau warned of dangerous surf conditions which could cause significant beach erosion.

Broad cold front sweeps over Western Australia

A cold front, which crossed the coast from Geraldton, 450km north of Perth, to Bremer Bay, 500km southeast, late yesterday brought widespread heavy rains and hail today.

There were numerous reports of small, but intense hailstorms across the metro area, including the city, Ellenbrook, Woodvale and Midland to the east.

One PerthNow commenter, from Midland, said a fierce hailstorm had left the ground white, as if it had snowed.

Today’s cold, wintry weather comes after yesterday’s strong cold front brought squally thunderstorms packing potential wind gusts up to 125km/h which swept across the South West and metropolitan area yesterday afternoon, hitting areas from Geraldton to Narrogin to Albany last night.

The State Emergency Service received 35 calls for help during and after the storm, mainly in the metro area for minor damage to homes and fallen trees on patios.

Heavy rain in South-West, Perth Hills

In the South West Forest Grove recorded 50mm, Cowaramup 47mm; Witchcliffe, just south of Margaret River, and Donnybrook had 43mm; Cape Naturaliste 33mm and Bunbury 27mm, with many centres receiving 20mm or more.

Further north, Dwellingup, 97km south of Perth, got 52mm; Bickley in the Perth Hills received a drenching with 67mm; Swanbourne 41mm and Jandakot 33mm. Perth city recorded 27mm and Perth Airport 31mm.

Most stations in the Hills received 40mm or more, with Pickering Brook 56mm; Karnet and Mundaring 46mm.

Strong winds buffeted most of the South West and the city with gusts recorded over 100km/h. Mandurah had a gust of 102km/h and Rottnest Island 96km/h.

Good rainfalls reached most of the Wheatbelt with farmers welcoming much-needed falls of 15mm to 30mm to boost yields on all grain crops.

In the Central West, Dandaragan had 24mm; Badgingarra 22mm, Northampton 18mm, Mingenew 17mm; and Morawa 11mm, with Geraldton Airport recording just over 8mm. But much of the region received 15mm or more.

In the Great Southern Wandering got 35mm, Williams 27mm, Katanning 25mm, Narrogin 24mm, Brookton 21mm and Lake Grace 10mm.

In the Central Wheatbelt, where farmers are desperate for rain, York got 26mm, Wongan Hills 17mm; Northam 16mm.

Sheep farmers warning

Sheep farmers in the Lower West, Great Southern, Southwest, South Coastal,Southeast Coastal, and the southern parts of the Central Wheat Belt and Central West districts are advised that wet and windy conditions are expected during Tuesday as a deep low pressure system moves to the south of the state. There is a serious risk of sheep or lamb losses.

A hailstorm has battered Johannesburg, with several road accidents being reported. Radio 702’s early morning show has been inundated with calls and SMSes from people reporting heavy hail and rain. Several said road conditions were very poor and urged motorists to drive with extreme caution. Presenter Ray White said he had heard of a fatal accident in Randfontein. A caller said she was stuck behind a three-car pile-up. One man, calling from Rosebank, said: “It’s white, white, white.” Another woman said that even though she was driving at 50km/h, her brakes were not working because of the slipperiness of the roads. On Twitter at 5.57am, the SA Weather Service posted this warning: “Severe thunderstorm over N. Joburg and Centurion with possible heavy falls that might lead to road flooding within the next 30min.”

Heavy rain and a high tide caused flooded streets in Fall River on Wednesday. Trucks, cars and ambulances tried to navigate streets that looked more like rivers. Flash floods forced people to abandon cars and even trapped some people inside Bruce Morrow’s sporting goods store. “We were inside and people all of a sudden the people inside said, ‘Hey the water is coming in the doors,’” said Morrow. Close to 40 people were trapped in the store during the torrential downpour and flash flooding. “He told us we could leave, but where were we going to go? Honestly, the water was all the way up. Where were you going to go? Swim across to a truck that’s submerged?” said Melonie O’Brien, who was trapped in the store. Some drivers plowed through flooded streets, leaving small wakes in their path. Roads were closed; cars were diverted or abandoned in the middle of the madness. “My car is here. Now I have to walk to work because I can’t get by anywhere,” said Shannon Sousa, who abandoned her car. “Just made it here, but all over it’s completely flooded. It’s ridiculous. It’s like the whole city is shut down right now.” The ramp to 24 at Exit 8A was waterlogged and closed to traffic. The only way people were getting around at the height of the storm was on foot and without shoes. Everything in the town was soaked. “This is the worst it’s ever been in the last 22 years since we’ve been here. Just two weeks ago it was almost this bad. This is the worst,” said John Norfolk, who is cleaning up after his store flooded. The Red Cross is on the scene trying to help some of the stores and businesses that have been drenched with the torrential rains.

Torrential rains and floods yesterday killed at least 15 people in Pakistan, officials said. Pakistan-administered Kashmir in the north and the southern port city of Karachi were among the worst-hit areas. Police officer Malik Shafiq said “13 people, including three women, were swept away” by a flooded stream in Machhera village, about 35kms from the Kahmir capital Muzaffarabad. “So far we recovered one body while efforts were underway to find others,” Shafiq said. Rescue work was underway, he added. He adding there were also reports of landslide in the area. “The water level is still very high and has hampered the rescue operation. It seems that there is no chance for any survival,” Ansar Yaqoob, a senior government official added. Two people died when the roof of their house collapsed due to rain in the Hafizabad district of Punjab province. Police said more people were still trapped under the debris. In Karachi, prolonged power cuts and gridlocks were reported after heavy rainfall as officials struggled to restore electricity to the financial hub with a population of more than 18mn. Chief meteorologist Arif Mehmood said his department had forecast heavier monsoon rains than the previous year.

A steam leak brought on by an involuntary chemical reaction at France’s oldest nuclear plant has led to two people being slightly burnt, officials say. The accident occurred at the Fessenheim nuclear power plant in northeastern France within 1.5 kilometres of the border with Germany and about 40 kilometres from Switzerland. “It was not a fire,” the local prefecture said. “There was an outlet of oxygenated steam” produced after hydrogen peroxide reacted with water in a reservoir. About 50 firefighters have been deployed, an official from the service said. French power supplier EDF said “two people were slightly burnt through their gloves.”

Five people in the Auckland region have been diagnosed with potentially fatal meningococcal disease in the past week. Auckland Regional Public Health Service said no-one had died from it and no links between the cases had been established. Since January, 16 people in Auckland have contracted meningococcal disease – less than the 23 patients diagnosed with it during the same period in 2011. The last death from meningococcal disease reported in Auckland was in August last year. Meningococcal disease can be life threatening if it is not treated early. The health service is encouraging Aucklanders to remain alert for flu-like symptoms that become worse within two or three days. On Monday, a Wellington teenager died from suspected meningococcal disease. It is the first suspected meningococcal death in that region this year. Amanda Crook-Barker had the day off school after feeling “a little bit sick”. The 12-year-old vomited in the morning and developed a rash around 3pm. Ambulance staff were called after her symptoms worsened and she died in hospital at 5pm.

Meteoroids Change Atmospheres of Earth, Mars, Venus

Meteoroids streaking through the atmospheres of planets such as Earth, Mars and Venus can change these worlds’ air, in ways that researchers are just now beginning to understand.

Most planetary atmospheres are made up of simple, low-mass elements and compounds such as carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen. But when a debris particle, or meteoroid, passes through, it can shed heavier, more exotic elements such as magnesium, silicon and iron.

Such elements can have a significant impact on the circulation and dynamics of winds in the atmosphere, researchers say.

“That opens up a whole new network of chemical pathways not usually there,” said Paul Withers of Boston University.

Contaminating the outer layers

Part of a planet’s upper atmosphere, the ionosphere contains plasma – a mixture of positively charged (ionized) atoms or molecules and the negatively charged electrons stripped from them. When simple elements such as oxygen move into this outer shell, they break apart easily, decaying in a matter of minutes.

But meteoroids streaking toward a planet’s surface carry heavier metals that can be removed in a variety of ways. A grain of dust, for instance, may rapidly burn up, shedding already-ionized magnesium as it falls. Or, neutral magnesium may be torn from the small rock, then receive a charge from sunlight or from stripping an electron from another particle. The newly charged elements can take as much as a full day to decay.

Meteoroids that blaze a trail through the atmosphere are called meteors, or shooting stars. Only those that make it to the ground are meteorites.

“When we add metal ions to the ionosphere as a result of this meteoroid input, we create plasma in regions where there wasn’t any plasma there to start out with,” Withers told SPACE.com.

In a recent article for Eos, the American Geophysical Union’s newspaper covering Earth and space sciences, Withers discusses important questions raised by the recent wealth of research on the upper atmosphere of Mars and Venus.

Shocking similarities, strange differences

Over the last decade, scientists have collected more and more information about the ionospheres of Mars and Venus. Though one might envision the composition and location of the two planets would create different interactions in the ionosphere, the two are actually very similar, scientists say.

“If you stand at the surface of the two planets, they are very different,” Withers said. “But up at about 100 kilometers (62 miles), conditions are surprisingly similar.”

The pressures, temperatures, and chemistry at high altitudes are comparable for the two planets. So too are many of the properties of the layers of charged particles shed by meteoroids.

“The plasma densities are quite similar on average on all three planets, which is not what you might expect on the first impression,” Withers said, referring to Earth, Mars and Venus.

Since the sun is the ultimate driving force for most ionization processes, it’s tempting to assume that Venus has more particles in a given area than Mars does because it orbits twice as closely to our star. Instead, the two planets have similar densities, which differ from Earth’s measurements by only a factor of ten.

At the same time, the layers affected by the meteoroids on Earth are very narrow, maybe only a mile or two wide, while Venus and Mars both have layers stretching six to eight miles.

According to Withers, the difference may come from the presence of Earth’s strong magnetic field, a feature lacking on the other two planets. But scientists aren’t certain how much of a role the field actually plays.

Finding the source

To study Earth’s ionosphere, scientists can launch rockets to take measurements in the region. But the process is more complicated for other planets.

As a spacecraft travels through the solar system, a targeted radio signal sent back to Earth can be aimed through the ionosphere of a nearby planet. Plasma in the ionosphere causes small but detectable changes in the signal that allow scientists to learn about the upper atmosphere.

This process – known as radio occultation – doesn’t require any fancy equipment, only the radio the craft already uses to communicate with scientists on Earth.

“It’s really one of the workhorse planetary science instruments,” Withers said.

Because it is so simple, the process has been applied to every planet ever visited by spacecraft.

Only in recent years has enough data come back on Venus and Mars to seriously examine their upper atmospheres. As of yet, no numerical simulations have been created to explain some of the differences, but Withers expressed hope that this would change in the near future. Such simulations could help answer some of the questions that the observations have raised.

Withers also hopes that, in time, a detailed understanding of the ionosphere could even help scientists engage in a kind of “atmospheric archeology” for Venus and Mars.

One day, scientists may be able to track the history of comets in the solar system by measuring how planetary atmospheres have been affected by the icy wanderers’ shed dust and gas. But conclusions drawn by this sort of sleuthing are probably a ways down the road, Withers said.

A new strain of avian flu virus that was found in China two months ago has appeared in Vietnam, health experts have confirmed. The new strain, 2.3.2.1 C, which has been detected through epidemic investigations, is highly toxic and therefore extremely deadly, Diep Kinh Tan, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said at a meeting on September 4 to review the epidemic situation. The 2.3.2.1 C strain has recently spread to Vietnam and is now present in affected areas in seven provinces and cities, namely Haiphong, Ha Tinh, Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh, Bac Kan, Thanh Hoa and Quang Ngai, said Hoang Van Nam, head of the Department of Animal Health (DoAH). As the new strain is different from the A/H5N1 virus, the ministry is to conduct experiments and tests to confirm if the vaccines that are being used to combat A/H5N1 are also effective against the new strain.If the existing medication is ineffective, studies on new vaccines against the new strain should be conducted soon, Tan said, adding that he has asked the DoAH to isolate the virus for this purpose. The Central Veterinary Diagnosis Center is also monitoring and looking into the new strain to help find a specific medication against it. The avian flu has so far this year severely impacted the seven above-mentioned provinces and cities, with more than 181,000 ducks and chicken having died or been culled, the DoAH reported. Most of these provinces are involved in smuggling poultry from China that might have carried pathogens that were then spread to domestic poultry, the department said.

Multiple airlocks are employed and are electronically secured to prevent both doors opening at the same time. All air and water service going to and coming from a Biosafety Level 4 (P4) lab will undergo similar decontamination procedures to eliminate the possibility of an accidental release.

Tens of thousands of rotting fish are lining a 40-kilometre stretch of shoreline along Lake Erie, reports the provincial environment ministry, which is investigating the cause. A spokesperson for the Ontario Ministry of Environment said Tuesday the kill was reported on the weekend. So far it appears the fish may have died from the affects of a naturally occurring lake inversion rather than a spill, but cautioned the investigation is continuing. The question now is which agency is responsible for cleaning up the rotting carcasses of thousands of yellow perch, carp, sheepshead, catfish, big head buffalo and suckers, which kept untold beachgoers from enjoying their Labour Day weekend. “It (the water) was quite putrid really … I had never experienced anything like this,” said Neville Knowles, of London, Ont. and cottager at Rondeau Provincial Park for more than 50 years. The dead fish stretch from west of the fishing village of Port Stanley in Elgin County to the village of Morpeth in Chatham-Kent or just east of Rondeau. “There was a significant number of fish, tens of thousands,” the environment ministry’s Kate Jordan told the Star. Jordan said the ministry officials took fish and water samples for analysis, “but all observations made at the site … did not show anything unusual and we did not see any evidence of … a spill to the lake or man-made pollution … so we are considering natural causes, including a lake inversion.” She explained that an inversion happens when the surface water cools down dramatically, sinks and displaces the bottom layer, which has lower oxygen content. As the bottom layer is displaced, it rises and robs fish of oxygen needed to survive. The phenomenon is also referred to as the lake “rolling over.” Even so, some residents are suspicious just the same that run-off from a large pig operation along the stretch may have caused the fish to die, said Knowles, who quickly added there is nothing to support that position.

The Coast Guard is investigating about 90 reports of oil and chemical releases associated with Hurricane Isaac, including a leak from a closed storage facility in Plaquemines Parish that killed several brown pelicans, officials said Tuesday. Separately, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries closed a stretch of coastline from Elmer’s Island to Belle Pass after a tar mat appeared in the Gulf of Mexico and tar balls washed ashore. The closure affects commercial and recreational fisheries from the shore to one mile offshore. The agency and Department of Environmental Quality will determine the source of the oil, but its location has stoked concerns that it is remnants of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and subsequent oil leak. The Coast Guard did not address Tuesday’s coastal closure, which happened hours after senior officers, including Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Robert Papp, held a press conference at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans’s headquarters in Algiers. But Coast Guard officials said that in addition to causing new spills, hurricanes do stir up oil resting the seabed. “It often happens, particularly down here in the Gulf area,” Papp said. Oil samples have been sent to a Coast Guard laboratory in New London, Conn., for analysis, which is expected to take a week, Lt. Lily Zepeda said. The Coast Guard is responding to “several different reports of oil,” including at Myrtle Grove in Plaquemines Parish, said Rear Adm. Roy Nash, commander of the 8th Coast Guard District, whose headquarters is in New Orleans.A “defunct” terminal with storage tanks at Myrtle Grove leaked oil that has been contained, said Capt. Peter Gautier, commander of Coast Guard Sector New Orleans and captain of the port of New Orleans. But the oil contaminated seven or eight brown pelicans. “Several of those are dead,” he said. Other reports range from lose barrels to overturned rail cars and tanks that are not leaking, Gautier said. He also cited a chemical release in Braithwaite, the scene of some of Isaac’s most serious flooding that left two people dead and scores of others homeless when the storm surge topped a parish-owned levee. Incidents reported to the Coast Guard’s National Response Center last week include an oil storage barge carrying 1,646 barrels of crude oil that was missing from an oil production facility in Barataria Bay; a discharge from an offshore platform near South Pass; and a release from a platform near High Island because of an equipment malfunction after the platform was evacuated. U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., also at the press conference, called Isaac’s hovering on the region for 60 hours “unprecedented.””It could have been a lot worse, considering he infrastructure,” Landrieu said of the region’s petroleum industry. She also used Isaac to renew her call to provide hurricane protection to communities such as Venice in Lower Plaquemines, home to people who work in the offshore industry and maritime commerce. “This is a very strategic area for the United States of America,” Landrieu said. Papp, the senior most Coast Guard officer, said he traveled to the Gulf Coast “to thank my Coast Guard people” for their response to Isaac. He also said Coast Guard personnel stationed in the region were impacted by the storm like everyone else.

A cave-in at a construction site injured eight workers and trapped at least one other in Wuhan, Hubei province, on Wednesday, local authorities said. The collapse happened at 7:30 am in the underground structure of a planned market for home furnishings and building materials in Qiaokou district. A staff member of the market, who declined to give a name, said that the workers were pouring concrete over the roof of the building when the collapse happened. At least one worker remained trapped in the rubble and a search by three teams of firefighters continued, said an official surnamed Tong from the fire control department of Wuhan on Wednesday. The cave-in caused a clutter of steel bars and concrete that made the rescue work difficult, Tong said. Eight injured people pulled from the debris were sent to Wuhan No 10 Hospital for treatment. Six workers were slightly injured and two critically, a doctor at the hospital said. A resident surnamed Wang who lives near the construction site said that he heard a loud bang and felt a tremor when the site collapsed. The construction company for the project is Zhejiang Baoye Construction Group.

May 30, 2012HAWAII – A swarm of 30 earthquakes rattled Hawaii’s Mount Kilauea volcano over a 48 period from Monday to Tuesday. The strongest of the tremors was a 3.3 magnitude earthquake which erupted on May 29, at a depth of 10 km. Most of the tremors have been very shallow, with most registering at depths of less than 8 km. Geologists have been warning for the last year that Hawaii’s seemingly placid volcano is capable of very violent large-scale outbursts so close monitoring of volcanic activity is crucial. –The Extinction Protocol

Earthquake: 4.1 quake strikes near Malibu

A shallow magnitude 4.1 earthquake was reported Tuesday evening 30 miles from Malibu , according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 10:14 p.m. Pacific time at a depth of 0 miles.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was 35 miles from Port Hueneme , 35 miles from Channel Islands Beach, 37 miles from Oxnard and 53 miles from Los Angeles Civic Center.

In the last 10 days, there have been no earthquakes magnitude 3.0 and greater centered nearby.

Supervolcanoes ‘can grow in just hundreds of years’

The largest volcanoes on our planet may take as little as a few hundred years to form and erupt.

These “supervolcanoes” were thought to exist for as much as 200,000 years before releasing their vast underground pools of molten rock.

Researchers reporting in Plos One have sampled the rock at the supervolcano site of Long Valley in California.

Their findings suggest that the magma pool beneath it erupted within as little as hundreds of years of forming.

That eruption is estimated to have happened about 760,000 years ago, and would have covered half of North America in its ash.

Such super-eruptions can release thousands of cubic kilometres of debris – hundreds of times larger than any eruption seen in the history of humanity.

Eruptions on this scale could release enough ash to influence the global weather for years, and one theory holds that the Lake Toba eruption in Indonesia about 70,000 years ago had long-term effects that nearly wiped out humans altogether.

What little is known about the formation of these supervolcanoes is largely based on the study of crystals of a material called zircon, which contains small amounts of radioactive elements whose age can be estimated using the same techniques used to date archaeological artefacts and dinosaur bones.

Zircon studies to date have suggested that the time between the formation of the enormous magma pools and the eventual super-eruptions can be measured in the hundreds of thousands of years.

Now, Guilherme Gualda of Vanderbilt University and his colleagues present several lines of evidence from the Bishop Tuff deposit at Long Valley, suggesting that the pools are “ephemeral” – lasting as little as 500 years before eruption.

Initially, the magma pools are nearly purely liquid rock, with few bubbles or re-crystallised minerals.

Over time, crystals develop, but the process stops at the point of the eruption. As a result, the characteristic development time of these crystals can also give an estimate of how long a magma pool existed before erupting.

Rather than zircon, the team’s target was crystals of the common mineral quartz.

Because the processes and timescales of quartz formation in the extraordinary underground conditions of a magma pool are well-known, the team was able to determine how long the crystals were forming within Long Valley’s supervolcano before being spewed out in the eruption.

Their estimates suggest the quartz formed over a range of time between 500 and 3,000 years.

“Our study suggests that when these exceptionally large magma pools form they are ephemeral and cannot exist very long without erupting,” said Dr Gualda.

“The fact that the process of magma body formation occurs in historical time, instead of geological time, completely changes the nature of the problem.”

At present, geologists do not believe that any of Earth’s known giant magma pools are in imminent danger of eruption, but the results suggest future work to better understand how the pools develop, and aim ultimately to predict devastating super-eruptions.

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) on Wednesday declared a preventive “green alert” due to recent seismic activity at three volcanoes: Rincón de la Vieja, in the northwestern province of Guanacaste, Poás, northwest of San José in the province of Alajuela, and Turrialba, in the eastern province of Cartago.

“The CNE’s alert is supported by reports from technical and scientific agencies that note the volcanoes are in constant activity,” the commission stated.

Turrialba Volcano, 70 kilometers east of the capital, has seen significant volcanic and seismic activity in recent months, prompting the National Seismological Network to upgraded its own color threat level to yellow.

Emissions of gas at Poás Volcano are expected to increase, and Rincón de la Vieja Volcano has also seen significant volcanic activity, the CNE noted.

Despite the warning, access to the volcanoes will remain open to the public, but visitors must follow guidelines issued at each national park’s entrance.

500 evacuated in volcano alert

A light spewing of ash amid renewed rumblings in the Nevado del Ruiz volcano prompted Colombian authorities to evacuate 500 people from beneath its flanks and briefly suspend flights at four airports.

The volcano’s seismic activity was more intense than episodes in April and early May, when it emitted columns of steam, said the government geological agency Ingeominas. The 17,160ft volcano spouted ash that fell on population centres including the western city of Manizales.

Recovery hope ends for miners

The families of 29 men killed 18 months ago when an explosion ripped through a New Zealand coal mine say they are abandoning their campaign to get the remains returned.

Bernie Monk — whose 23-year-old son Michael died in the November 2010 disaster — said an assessment by new mine owners Solid Energy indicates the old mine shaft remains dangerously full of methane. He said the families do not want to risk any more lives in a recovery operation.

Sudan leaves oil-rich region

Sudan withdrew its army from the disputed Abyei border region that contains rich oil fields and is contested by neighbouring South Sudan, handing it over to UN forces, a semi-official media agency reported.

The Sudan Media Centre quoted Al-Khair al-Faheem Mekki, co-chairman of the committee that oversaw the handover, as saying Ethiopian troops would fill the vacuum and maintain security.

Heritage bid for sunken city

A team of international archaeologists said they will ask the United Nations cultural agency to bestow world heritage status on Port Royal, the mostly submerged remains of a historic Jamaican port known as the “wickedest city on earth” more than three centuries ago.

It was once a bustling place where buccaneers docked in search of rum, women and boat repairs. In recent days, consultants have conducted surveys to mark the old city’s land and sea boundaries to apply for the world heritage designation.

Description
The vineyards around the villages of Pignans, Carnoules, Flassans-sur-Issole, Carcès, Besse-sur-Issole, Brignoles, Correns, Cotignac and Le Val et Montfort-sur-Argens in the central Var were at the centre of the storm. For some vineyards, the hail was violent enough to not only destroy this year’s harvest but also those of next year and possibly even 2014. In a primary survey, around ten co-operatives and between thirty to forty independent domains have been affected. A special committee has been set up to evaluate the damage to the individual wine domaines and for compensation to be available. Local mayors have asked for a state of natural catastrophe to be declared. The President of the ‘Syndicat des Vignerons du Var’ said he had never seen a hail storm of this violence. The minister of Agriculture, Stéphane Le Foll, is looking into the extent of the damage, promising support for those hit by the hail.

Montreal Floods: Heavy Rain Causes Power Failures, Shut Down Parts Of Metro (VIDEO)

MONTREAL – A wall of rain collapsed onto Montreal in one torrential instant that flooded city streets, closed subway stations, caused power failures, damaged private property and forced evacuations from public buildings Tuesday.

It took only a few minutes to transform downtown streets into miniature canals. The foul odour of overflowing sewage floated over the area near the port.

Many thousands of people were affected. While some scooped water from their own basements, much larger buildings were evacuated including a fancy downtown hotel, the Quebec provincial library, multiple university pavilions, commercial centres and a large part of the metro system.

More than 28,000 people lost electricity in Quebec, with more than half those disruptions occurring in the province’s biggest city. All but about 4,300 customers in the province and 1,900 in Montreal regained their power later in the evening.

The brief but powerful storm saw a sunny afternoon lapse into night-like darkness. A solid slab of water crashed through the air, eventually bursting sideways in what looked like puffy, swirling white clouds.

The rain overwhelmed the city’s aging infrastructure in some places, with water pushing up through manhole covers and sometimes lifting them up.

People scrambled through the streets, some screaming as they were pelted and struggling to cling to umbrellas that seemed about to fly out of their hands.

By the time it was over, there were cars partly submerged in what looked like little lakes, while a pool of water covered several subway stations.

Within hours, many of the trouble spots had been cleared and the metro service was restored on the line that had been disrupted.

Environment Canada said between 40 and 80 millimetres of rain had fallen on the city. Federal meteorologist Andre Cantin said it was the kind of event that occurs in a city once every five to 10 years.

At the Place d’Armes metro stop near Old Montreal, the water was ankle-deep at the ground-floor turnstile — which is well above the lower-level tracks.

Would-be commuters said they had arrived there to an improbable sight: a sheet of water spilling onto the turnstile area from the windows above.

“It was raining from the ceiling,” said Allyson Haring after she navigated the ankle-deep water around the ticket booth.

Her friend said she had never seen anything like it.

“Up here if it’s flooded, I wonder what is going on down there (on the tracks),” said Brenna Maciw, who was scrambling to find another way home to the city’s outer suburbs.

“I feel like this is something that’s going to go down in the books.”

Business people hoping to take the subway skipped, hopped and sloshed through the massive puddles — some while wearing high heels. Upon arriving, they were turned away.

Transit workers, meanwhile, tried to sop up the water with mops and vacuums.

Fire department crews were also dispatched from a number of stations, their heavy engines kicking up water in the streets ahead of them like the bows of ships.

There were also unconfirmed reports of the police 911 system being overwhelmed by calls.

The late-afternoon storm followed a lengthy and loud early morning thunderstorm in the city, and a sunny afternoon. Between those two storms, up to 120 mms had fallen on Montreal, about a third of it coming in the less severe morning shower.

The worst downpour during the afternoon rush hour caused a temporary shutdown of the Ville-Marie tunnel, one of the city’s busiest and most important expressways.

A famous Olympic athlete was caught up in the mess.

“Yup,” figure skater Joannie Rochette tweeted, “I’ve just taken a boat tour of the Ville-Marie tunnel!”

There was minor damage at the local CBC building. A spokesman there said floods did not damage the broadcaster’s archives.

Concordia University was investigating reports of damage to its library. Classes continued Tuesday evening but some university buildings were evacuated, including the library. Pavilions were also evacuated at UQAM university.

Guests were forced to leave an upscale hotel, Le Crystal, that had been flooded. There were also reports on Twitter that several hundred students at a CEGEP, Dawson College, were forced to evacuate during a major exam.

There were some stomach-churning scenes, too.

The clogged sewers caused dirty water to accumulate in some low-lying neighbourhoods. The local CTV station ran, on its website, a photo supplied by a viewer of a rat swimming on the street.

From a single downtown intersection it was possible to see emergency vehicles zipping off in three different directions, their lights flashing and sirens wailing.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Heavy rainstorms have washed out and closed parts of roads in southwestern New Hampshire. The state Department of Transportation says major roadways with high water or washouts after Tuesday evening’s rain are Routes 9, 10 and 12. Route 9 is a major east-west roadway. The areas affected by the road closures include Gilsum and Sullivan. DOT spokesman Bill Boynton says luckily it’s not a statewide issue and there are no reports of traffic accidents or casualties. He says he won’t know how much damage there was to the roads until the water subsides. The heaviest rain fell from around 6 to 6:30 p.m. Concord also had heavy rain but no reports of roads affected. The National Weather Service says hail the size of a quarter rained down on Alstead.

One person has skin lesions and 16 animals have died in an anthrax outbreak in northern Colombia, near the Venezuelan border. A notification on the website for the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said the outbreak has affected two farms in the department of La Guajira. Colombia’s Agriculture Ministry sent the information to the OIE on May 28. The source of the deadly bacteria has not yet been determined, the report said. One of the affected populations “belongs to an indigenous community in the department of La Guajira,” the notice states. “The community has been informed of the protocol to be applied to dispose of the carcasses, mainly the fact that, under no circumstances, the dead animals must be neither manipulated nor consumed,” the report said. Humans commonly contract anthrax through close contact with infected animals or eating ones that have died from the disease. “Susceptible species are being vaccinated. An intense epidemiological surveillance is being conducted in the area together with the public health authorities,” the notification continued. The animals will be also be quarantined in response to the outbreak. Three goats, three sheep and two pigs have died from the outbreak on one farm. Another five goats and two pigs have died on a separate farm. Anthrax, also used as a biological weapon, is caused by the spore-forming bacteria Bacillus anthracia, the OIE website states. The disease causes dark ulcers on the skin of infected people when contracted from exposure to infected animals, and it occurs on all the continents.

A possible outbreak of meningitis in the North West is being investigated, the provincial health department says. “Outbreak response teams had been sent to Majakaneng village, near Brits, following a confirmed meningitis death at a local school,” spokesman Tebogo Lekgethwane said in a statement. He said two more children with suspected meningitis died in the last month in the village. “Interviews conducted by the response teams indicated the deceased children showed signs and symptoms of meningitis.” This could not be confirmed because the children died before visiting a health facility, he said. Lekgethwane said meningitis was a disease caused by the inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. “The inflammation is usually caused by an infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord.” He said meningitis may develop in response to a number of causes, usually bacteria, viruses and fungal infections. The severity of illness and the treatment for meningitis differed, depending on the cause. “Symptoms can appear in any order, but the first symptoms are usually fever, vomiting, sensitivity to light, stiff neck, vomiting and headache, and feeling unwell — just like many mild illnesses,” said Lekgethwane.

Two small asteroids buzz Earth in back-to-back flybys

NASA says they were well within moon’s orbit, but posed no danger to our planet

Two small asteroids zipped close by Earth in back-to-back flybys of the planet Monday and Tuesday. While both space rocks came well within the moon’s orbit, they posed no danger to our planet, NASA scientists say.

The newfound asteroid 2012 KP24 zoomed by Earth Monday, coming within 32,000 miles (51,000 kilometers) on its closest approach, according to astronomers at NASA’s Asteroid Watch at the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

“We’ll have a close but very safe pass of asteroid 2012 KP24 May 28,” scientists with NASA’s Asteroid Watch program assured via Twitter.

Asteroid Watch is part of the Near-Earth Object Office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

The NEO office oversees the agency’s efforts to detect, track and characterize potentially dangerous asteroids or comets that could zoom close to Earth.

The recently discovered asteroid 2012 KP24 measures about 69 feet (21 meters) across and did not pose any threat to Earth during its flyby, NASA scientists said.

But this space rock is not the only one that paid a close visit to our planet this week.

Another small asteroid, called 2012 KT42, flew past Earth early Tuesday. The asteroid came within 8,950 miles (14,400 km) on its closest approach, which easily fits between the Earth and moon’s orbit. For comparison, the moon typically circles Earth at a distance of about 240,000 miles (386,000 km).

While asteroid 2012 KT42 was only discovered yesterday, the space rock did not pose any impact threat Earth when it made its closest approach at 3:07 a.m. EDT, NASA scientists said.

The small space rock is only about 16 feet (5 m) wide, which means it would not pack much of a punch even if it did hit the planet, according to astronomer Tony Phillips on his website Spaceweather.com, which monitors major space weather and skywatching events.

“Even if it did hit, this space rock is too small to cause significant damage,” Phillips wrote. “It would likely disintegrate almost entirely in the atmosphere, peppering the ground below with relatively small meteorites.”

Astronomers with NASA and other organizations regularly scan the skies in search of potentially dangerous near-Earth objects.

Experts estimate that space rocks that measure about 460 feet (140 m) across or larger could cause widespread devastation if they impact the planet. A much larger asteroid, however, would be required to cause destruction on a global scale.

Massive cosmic impacts may have once warmed ancient Mars

Findings could explain how cold, dry world might have sustained conditions friendly for life

Cosmic impacts that once bombed Mars might have sent temperatures skyrocketing on the Red Planet in ancient times, enough to set warming of the surface on a runaway course, researchers say.

According to scientists, these findings could potentially help explain how this cold, dry world might have once sustained liquid water and conditions potentially friendly for life.

The largest craters still visible on Mars were created about 3.7 billion to 4.1 billion years ago. For instance, the Argyre basin — a crater about 710 miles (1,140 kilometers) wide generated by a comet or asteroid 60 to 120 miles (100 to 200 km) in diameter — is thought to be 3.8 billion to 3.9 billion years old,

The origin of these immense craters roughly coincides with when many branching Martian river valley networks apparently formed. The impact that created Argyre basin would have released an extraordinary amount of energy, far more than any bomb made by humanity, or even the asteroid suspected of ending the Age of Dinosaurs 65 million years ago. It would have been an explosion with an energy on the order of 10^26 joules, or 100 billion megatons of TNT. Altogether, scientists had calculated these giant collisions would have raised surface temperatures on Mars by hundreds of degrees.

Long-term warming on Mars?
Now these researchers find this heating might not have been fleeting. Instead, the warming might have gone on a runaway course, pushing Mars into a long-term stable warm state.

The idea of runaway warming is most commonly associated with Venus. Scientists think that planet’s close proximity to the sun heated its water, causing it to build up in Venus’ atmosphere as steam. Water is a greenhouse gas, trapping heat from the sun that would have vaporized still more water, leading to a runaway greenhouse effect that apparently boiled all the oceans off Venus.

 Ultraviolet light would have then eventually split this atmospheric water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen escaped into space, the oxygen became trapped in the rocks of the planet, and the end-result was a bone-dry Venus.

The researchers note the many giant impacts Mars experienced might have heated the planet enough to send vast amounts of the greenhouse gases water and carbon dioxide into the air. Their computer models suggest that there might have been enough of these gases in the Martian atmosphere to trigger a long-lasting runaway greenhouse effect.

The impact that created the Argyre basin might have by itself been large enough to trigger such a chain reaction. Other impacts that might have pushed Mars toward a runaway greenhouse include the ones that created the Isidis and Hellas basins.

“Any terrestrial planet, including Venus, the Earth or even exoplanets, may have experienced a temporary or permanent runaway greenhouse climate caused by impacts,” researcher Teresa Segura, a planetary scientist at the commercial satellite firm Space Systems/Loral in Palo Alto, Calif., told Astrobiology Magazine.

It is possible that any impacting comets might have delivered even more greenhouses gases into the atmosphere once they vaporized. Still, “the kinetic energy is of most importance,” Segura said.

The researchers do note that during the runaway greenhouse phase, Mars would actually have been too warm for liquid water to last on its surface. Still, this heat would eventually subside — ultraviolet light would have caused the Martian atmosphere to lose its water just as Venus did, forcing the Red Planet to cool.

A wetter Mars
After runaway greenhouse conditions collapsed but before Mars became too cold for liquid water on its surface, the planet might have remained wet for a long time, possessing “a prolonged hydrological cycle with rainfall and valley networks as well as surface lakes,” Segura said.

It remains uncertain just how long either this runaway state or any wet period afterward might have lasted, but previous research suggests the warm climate may have lasted for at least centuries, she noted.

Future research could analyze the effects cosmic impacts might have on the climates of Venus, exoplanets and Earth. Although impacts might very well be capable of causing a runaway greenhouse effect now, “the size of the impact required is much larger than that we need to worry about today,” Segura said.

That is to say, if our planet was hit by an impact large enough to create the Argyre basin, there probably wouldn’t be anyone on Earth left to worry about any of the collision’s potential effects on climate.

Segura and her colleagues Christopher McKay and Owen Toon detailed their findings online May 2 in the journal Icarus.

A team of scientists from Mumbai left for Nagpur on Tuesday to investigate the impact of last Tuesday’s meteorite shower in the Katol region, which left several houses damaged. The team is expected to reach Nagpur on Wednesday early morning. “We were actually suppose to leave on Monday, but had to wait for the confirmation of our tickets,” Bharat Adur, head of Akash Ganga Centre for Astronomy (AGCA), Thane, said. The scientists will be at the site for the next three days to investigate the matter. “Based on the information I received, at least six houses were affected because of this meteorite shower…only stony iron meteorites have such a huge impact,” said Mr Adur, adding, “We cannot declare anything immediately, and can only confirm the type of meteorite shower, once we visit the site.” When asked if anyone was to be blamed for not forewarning the locals in Katol, Mr Adur said “ I am not blaming anyone for this, but European Space Research Organisation (Esro) should have been more tactful. For that matter, even the airport authorities are provided with a radar, which detects such meteorite showers, at least an hour before they hit the earth. Adequate precautions could have been taken.” Residents of Katol were left shaken after a meteor-ite shower hit the region on May 22. “People are bound to get scared; I will be meeting my relatives and friends as soon as I reach Katol,” Mr Adur said.

Pillars of Light

“Light pillars” is a visual phenomenon created by the reflection of light which looks like joining the earth and the sky.

It’s not a mystery that how these are formed but it is considered a wonder of nature best viewed just before sunrise or just after sunset, when the sun is low on the horizon.The real reason why these are formed is the ice and pillars are created Light whether artificial or natural, when falls on ice reflects light.These light pillars are created by the reflection of light on the ice. The color and size of them vary depending on the distance from where they are viewed.

The most unforgettable experience is to see a few of them side by side.

Lava “Lake”

This phenomenon should not be called a “lake” because there is no water in it. Instead, here is lava in voth frozen and liquid state.

On our planet we have four such “lakes”: Erta Ale, Ethiopia (image above), Kilaulea, Hawaii, Erebus, Antarctica and Nyiragongo, the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are located in craters of volcanoes. Apparently they represent a very dangerous force of nature! Erta Ale in Ethiopia, for example, is the country’s only known active volcano. when it exploded recently, it forced nomads to flee lava flows, immediately.

The volcano also killed about 1,370 camels and goats, dried and polluted local rivers and has displaced over 2,000 people along with their cattle.

Dust Storm

It’s also a very dangerous, notorious force of nature. Dust storms can reach 2.5 km in height and are often seen on the Arabian peninsula, the Gobi Desert or the Sahara.

They are caused by strong winds blowing over loose soil or sand, and picking up so much of that material that visibility is greatly reduced. The widespread abundance of loose sand in deserts makes them the most common locations for sandstorms to form.

In desert regions at certain times of the year, sandstorms become more frequent because the strong heating of the air over the desert causes the lower atmosphere to become unstable. This instability mixes strong winds in the middle troposphere downward to the surface, producing stronger winds at the surface.

The “Dust Bowl” storms that swept across the Midwest from 1930 to 1936 were terrible experience. They displaced hundreds of thousands of agricultural workers in the central United States and Canada.

Sea sparkle

It is a mysterious experience when you walk along the beach on a warm summery evening, when sea sparkle is in the water. You can see it as your foot presses down on the wet sand. And you can see it in the breaking waves. Sparks of light!

It’s a sea sparkle or Noctiluca scintillans that lives near the surface of the ocean, where it feeds on other planktonic organisms.

When millions of sea sparkle are bounced around by the water or your feet, a chemical reaction takes places which produces a greenish light.

This light is meant to scare off predators. Sea sparkle likes rather quiet waters. Should the sea get too rough, it moves to deeper depths.

Fire Whirl/Fire Devil

It’s a very dangerous combination – it’s a vortex tornado with fire! Tornado itself extremely frightening, but combined with fire – it’s one of the most destructive forces. Whether a simple tornado turns into a tornado of fire whirlpool, is dependent on temperature. Warm air is directed to the inside and cold outside the vortex.

Why is it so dangerous? Well, it’s very difficult to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading. An extreme example is the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake in Japan. This tragic fire whirl ignited a large city-sized firestorm and produced a gigantic fire that killed 38,000 people in fifteen minutes in the Hifukusho-Ato region of Tokyo.

Today, fire whirls are often observed when burning grasslands by farmers.

Aurora Borealis

The aurora occurs along ring shaped regions around the north and south geomagnetic poles. The intensity of the displays vary from night to night and throughout each night.

An intense auroral display can cause many problems on the ground, such as intense electric currents along electric power lines (causing blackouts) and oil pipelines (enhancing corrosion).

The aurora can disturb the ionosphere and disrupt short wave communication. Auroral discharge electrons have even damaged the electronics and solar panels of communications and meteorological satellites, rendering them inoperable.

Ocean Currents

Tremendous whirlpools have always terrified sailors, especially in times when their boats were less resistant to weather conditions and enormous water masses. The atmospheric circulation that is set up between the equator and the poles also influences the redistribution of these water masses.

Wind blowing over the ocean surface exerts drag (friction) and starts to move the surface waters.

In addition the currents are influenced by the Coriolis Force and the tides.

Water masses, however, are both fascinating and dangerous force of nature.

In the vicinity of Scotland, one of the currents produces15 feet high waves and is easily heard even from a distance. Water is not always – an adventure. Tsunami, which is water’s very destructive acitivity is dangerous and deadly!

Description
A chemical mix-up at a Darigold plant in Southeast Portland sent eleven people to the hospital Wednesday morning. Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman Paul Corah says they are being treated for respiratory irritation. Corah says a truck was offloading corrosive material inside the plant when hoses were crossed. The material was pumped into the wrong tank. Corah says when the two chemicals mixed, they made a chlorine-type gas. A HAZMAT team is evaluating the condition of the plant. Corah says the gas leak has stopped and there will be no more evacuations required. He said neighbors who live near the plant are not in danger.

Two earthquakes rock Indonesia

JAKARTA: A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia’s Papua region on Saturday, sending panicked residents running from their homes and schools, officials said.

Authorities said there was no threat of a tsunami, and that the worst-hit area was the town of Ransiki in western Papua, where students attending morning classes ran from school buildings that shook for around a minute.

“We’ve had reports of mostly superficial damage to buildings, but two houses have caved and a church wall has collapsed,” Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) official Yulson Sineri, told AFP.

“There are so far no reports of victims, but there has been some damage to buildings in Ransiki,” he said.

The quake struck at 10:16 am (0116 GMT) at a depth of 30 kilometres (19 miles), 83 kilometres southeast of Manokwari, according to the USGS.

Authorities said the quake was felt in various parts of the West Papua province, on the western tip of New Guinea island.

The BMKG reported the quake’s magnitude at 6.8, with a depth of 10 kilometres.

A hotel receptionist at the Mansinam Beach Resort in Manokwari reported a minute of shaking, but said she saw no damage.

“All our guests panicked and ran out of the building, but they went back after the quake was over and everything is back to normal as far as I can see,” Anita, who goes by one name, told AFP.

The Papua region was struck by two mild aftershocks, while a 6.1-magnitude quake hit off Sumatra island, with no reports of damage or casualties.

Earlier on Saturday, a strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at 5:14 am (2314 GMT Friday) at a depth of about 34 kilometres (21 miles), 427 kilometres southwest of Banda Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra. There were no immediate reports of damage.

Aceh province was shaken earlier this month by two huge earthquakes, triggering an Indian Ocean-wide tsunami alert.

At a magnitude of 8.6, the first of the two quakes was the strongest to hit since the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 170,000 in Aceh. No major damage was reported.

Colombia prepares for imminent volcano eruption

Colombia‘s government has called for high risk areas to be prepared for the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano.

The Interior Ministry has ordered the fire departments of 19 municipalities in the central Caldas and Tolima departments to be on high alert after the Colombian Geological Survey (SGC) announced that an eruption is “probable” in the coming days or weeks.

The alert level was raised from yellow to orange in March as the volcano became increasingly active. Last week a column of gas and steam approximately 1,200 meters tall extended from its crater.

The national director of the firefighting system warned that there is urgent need for a special contingency plan that outlines tactics to be used in emergency volcanic situations, especially for search and rescue groups. He called for a focus on high risk areas in or near the paths of rivers that originate in the Ruiz, whose levels may be elevated by pyroclastic fragments and the melting of ice.

The director of the Colombian Fire Department Federation in the town of Riosucio explained that local firemen are preparing a plan and educating communities.

In 1985 The Nevado del Ruiz erupted, wiping out the town of Armero and killing 25,000 people.

Villages rocked by volcano eruption

A 17,886ft volcano outside Mexico City has exhaled dozens of towering plumes of ash and shot fragments of glowing rock down its slopes, frightening the residents of surrounding villages with hours of low-pitched roaring not heard in a decade.

A white cloud of ash, gas, water vapour and superheated rock spewed from the cone of Popocatepetl high above the village of Xalitzintla, whose residents said they were awakened by a window-rattling series of eruptions.

Mexico’s National Disaster Prevention Centre said that a string of eruptions had ended in the early morning, then started up again at 5.05am, with at least 12 in two hours.

“Up on the mountain, it feels incredible,” said Aaron Sanchez Ocelotl, 45, who was in his turf grass fields when the eruptions happened. “It sounds like the roaring of the sea.”

The white cone of Popo, as most call the mountain, is an iconic backdrop to Mexico City’s skyline on clear days, but its 40-mile distance means even a moderately large eruption is unlikely to do more than dump ash on one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas.

It is a different matter for the villages on the flanks of the volcano, where the quiet of the corn fields and fruit orchards was pervaded by the volcano’s spooky roaring.

“Everyone needs to take this seriously. This buzzing, this roaring isn’t normal,” said Gregorio Fuentes Casquera, the assistant mayor of Xalitzintla, a village of 2,600 people about seven miles from the summit. He said the town had prepared 50 buses and was sending out its six-member police forces to alert people to be ready to evacuate.

Dozens of women lined up in Xalitzintla’s main square to get free face masks and bottles of water. Health authorities were giving out 10 masks and 10 bottles of water to each family, and the surgical-style masks, intended to filter out the fine ash released by the volcano, were becoming common among the town’s students, who are required to wear them in school. Few adults wore them.

President Felipe Calderon said live on national television that authorities are keeping open roads around the mountain, preparing emergency shelters and making sure residents know the latest information about a potential eruption.

Authorities this week raised the alert level due to increasing activity at the volcano, whose most violent eruption in 1,200 years occurred on December 18 2000. More than 30 million people live within view of the volcano, which sits at a point where the states of Mexico, Puebla, and Morelos come together. It has been erupting intermittently since December 1994.

NRC Action Will Force Major Court Fight

An adverse decision by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will force parties concerned about the already troubled Vogtle nuclear reactor project in Georgia to file a motion this week in federal court, according to representatives of nine organizations that are seeking to slow down the Vogtle project so that necessary post-Fukushima safety enhancements can be taken into account on the front end – before billions of ratepayer dollars are spent.

In a phone-based news conference held just hours after the NRC rejection of their motion to stay construction, the groups explained that the NRC is violating federal law by issuing the Vogtle license without fully considering important public safety and environmental implications of the catastrophic Fukushima accident in Japan.

The new court proceeding would unfold against a backdrop of more than 30-plus license changes for the Vogtle reactors that Southern Company has said are needed and that the nine groups believe may result in possible delays and cost overruns.

The nine groups are the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, Center for a Sustainable Coast, Citizens Allied for Safe Energy, Friends of the Earth, Georgia Women’s Action for New Directions, North Carolina Waste Awareness and Reduction Network, Nuclear Information and Resource Service, Nuclear Watch South, and the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy.

They have asked federal judges to order the NRC to prepare a new environmental impact statement (EIS) for the proposed Vogtle reactors that would detail how cooling systems for the proposed reactors and spent fuel storage pools would meet new regulatory requirements in light of the Fukushima accident to protect the site, and nearby communities, against earthquakes, flooding and prolonged loss of electric power to the site.

Post-Fukushima safety requirements may also lead to a change in the economics of the Vogtle project compared to other energy alternatives.

Sara Barczak, High Risk Energy Choices program director, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, said: “As evidenced by today’s NRC decision, regulators unfortunately continue to ignore the real ramifications that this risky, expensive nuclear project could have on utility customers and local communities. There are serious safety and economic concerns that will eventually come to a front. Before billions more dollars are spent, post-Fukushima issues should be dealt with in order to best protect surrounding communities and ratepayers’ pocketbooks.”

Diane Curran, Harmon, Curran, Spielberg and Eisenberg, L.L.P., attorney for organizations, said: “The NRC predicts we are going to lose our case in federal court and therefore it refuses to order the suspension of construction at Vogtle while our court case proceeds. But the NRC only digs itself in deeper with this decision, which confirms that the NRC applied the wrong standard in refusing to supplement the EIS for Vogtle to address the environmental implications of the Fukushima accident – whether there was an ‘imminent risk’ of a Fukushima-like accident.

“But that is not the correct standard for whether a supplemental environmental analysis should be required. The standard is whether there is a significant risk of a severe accident sometime during the operating life of the reactor – not tomorrow.”

Dr. Arjun Makhijani, president, Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, said: “In denying a stay of the license, the Commission completely ignored our principal concern about the harm that will be caused by going ahead with construction now – that the costs of Fukushima-related backfits that may be required will be much greater after construction starts than if that issue is settled before construction, which is what we ask. The NRC gave short shrift to the interests of the public and specifically the ratepayers who are bearing the risks of Vogtle 3 and 4.

“For instance, the NRC ignored its own statements, as recent as January 2012, that the frequency of earthquakes of a given ground motion in the eastern region is now estimated to be higher than before. The Commission has failed to learn the lessons of the more than one hundred reactors to which it gave construction licenses in the 1970s that were later cancelled at great damage to ratepayers and the public in general in part because safety-related backfits were needed once construction had begun.”

Rev. Charles Utley, Environmental Justice coordinator, Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, said: “As residents living within view of Plant Vogtle, we oppose the siting yet another nuclear plant in our backyard. For years we have participated in public hearings, legal actions and many other tactics to slow, stop and reverse this fundamental injustice. For our children, our homes and our community, we will never give up.”

Curran added: “The decision also vividly illustrates how NRC tries to have it both ways, telling the public to ‘trust us’ that it is taking the Fukushima accident seriously, at the same time it refuses to be accountable to the public by supplementing the environmental impact statement for Vogtle or by even holding a hearing on whether it should be supplemented.

“Attendance at the only hearing the NRC has held on the question of whether the NRC should supplement the environmental study for Vogtle was limited to Southern Nuclear Operating Co. and the NRC technical staff. The NRC would not let the public participate and refused these groups’ request for a hearing on the very same issue. We should have learned from the Japanese accident that such a cozy relationship between industry and government regulators leads to complacency and poor regulatory decisions.”

In February, the groups asked the NRC to delay construction of the new Vogtle reactors until the court decided their case. Since the NRC refused their request today, they will re-file the stay motion on construction with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit later this week. They contend that construction should not be allowed until the NRC decides whether the proposed new reactors should be re-designed to provide for more rigorous protection against earthquakes and extended power outages.

To build reactors that might need to be significantly modified later and extensively backfitted in light of new post-Fukushima regulatory requirements risks wasting ratepayer dollars, causing unnecessary pollution, and even possible abandonment of the project.

According to the forecast, the clouds are going to hit Mercury, Earth, Mars and rover Curiosity en route to Mars. The impact on our planet, on April 22nd around 00:50 UT, is expected to be minor with auroras likely only at higher latitudes.

Black Hole In Scorpius Seen Firing Fast Cosmic Bullets 20 April, 2012 MessageToEagle.com – Located about 28,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Scorpius, there is a black hole named H1742-322.

Racing outward at about one-quarter the speed of light, “bullets” of ionized gas are thought to arise from a region located just outside the black hole’s event horizon, the point beyond which nothing can escape.

Using the Very Large Baseline Array and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite, an international team of astronomers have successfully managed to capture a detailed image of the black hole eruption.

The Very Large Baseline Array is a set of 10 radio telescopes that spans 5,000 miles from Mauna Kea in Hawaii to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It provides astronomers with the sharpest vision of any telescope on Earth or in space.

A black hole in the constellation Scorpius is firing fast cosmic bullets.“If your eyes were as sharp as the VLBA, you could see a person on the moon,” said physicist Gregory Sivakoff of the University of Alberta.

“Like a referee at a sports game, we essentially rewound the footage on the bullets’ progress, pinpointing when they were launched,” said Gregory Sivakoff of the University of Alberta in Canada.

Discovered by NASA’s HEAO-1 satellite in 1977, the system is composed of a normal star and a black hole of modest but unknown masses.Their orbit around each other is measured in days, which puts them so close together that the black hole pulls a continuous stream of matter from its stellar companion.

The flowing gas forms a flattened accretion disk millions of miles across, several times wider than our sun, centered on the black hole.

As matter swirls inward, it is compressed and heated to tens of millions of degrees, so hot that it emits X-rays.

Some of the infalling matter becomes re-directed out of the accretion disk as dual, oppositely directed jets.

This weekend, NASA scientists, amateur astronomers, and an astronaut on board the International Space Station will attempt the first-ever 3D photography of meteors from Earth and space.

“The annual Lyrid meteor shower peaks on April 21-22,” says Bill Cooke, the head of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office. “We’re going to try to photograph some of these ‘shooting stars’ simultaneously from ground stations, from a research balloon in the stratosphere, and from the space station.”

Vietnam baffled by mystery disease

Vietnam has asked the World Health Organization to help investigate a mystery disease that has killed 19 people and left 171 others sick.

Le Han Phong, chairman of the People’s Committee in Ba To district in Quang Ngai province, said patients first experience a rash on their hands and feet along with high fever, loss of appetite and eventually organ failure.

He said nearly 100 people remain in hospital, including 10 in critical condition. Patients with milder symptoms are being treated at home.

Mr Phong said the first case was detected last year and that the disease had died down until a spate of new infections were recently reported, mostly in one impoverished village.

A Ministry of Health investigation was inconclusive.

Hanoi has asked the World Health Organization for help to cure a virulent disease affecting children. Symptoms include blistering on hands, feet and mouths accompanied by high fever and eventual organ failure.

­Nineteen children died from the illness in 2011 alone.

The virus spreads through direct contact with an infected person’s oral discharges or saliva, the fluid from burst blisters or the stool of infected persons.

The Red Cross mission in Vietnam reports the disease has already infected over 28,000 children this year, which is more than 10 times the number of infected children in the same period last year.

According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), last year a record 110,000 children became infected, with 169 deaths.

The hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) disease mostly affects children under three years old (80 per cent of totals cases) the Red Cross said. There is no known treatment for HFMD.

Human HFMD differs from a similar foot-and-mouth disease affecting cattle, sheep, and pigs.

The virus was first detected last year in central Vietnam. Initially the disease died away, but later many new infections were reported. Most of those infected are from one impoverished villages.

Last year HFMD killed 19 people, reportedly most of them children. One hundred and seventy-one people were hospitalized, 10 in a critical condition. Some patients get milder symptoms and are able to be treated at home.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Health launched a fruitless investigation.

In previous years the registered HFMD cases were mild and most patients recovered after a maximum 10 days, but the new virulent strain EV71 has developed into a fatal disease.

The IFRC say it needs $840,000 to sponsor a program preventing the spread of the disease.

Vietnamese authorities are conducting a campaign to improve sanitation and hygiene practices in internal migrant families living in densely-populated areas.

Cases of HFMD are also on increase in other Asian countries, including Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Salem – The Salem witch tragedy of 1692 took less than two years to play out. Yet 300 years later, explanations for how and why it happened are still coming.

One theory recently gaining exposure thanks to bloggers comes from a 2004 college thesis that places the blame on something we think of as a strictly modern phenomenon: climate change.

Proposed in a Harvard thesis, the paper by economist Emily Oster has earned attention due to the modern swirl of controversy surrounding the possibility that human interaction has altered world temperatures.

Currently an assistant professor at the University of Chicago, Oster linked periodic outbreaks of violence against people accused of witchcraft with dramatic temperature drops.

“The most active period of the witchcraft trials (mainly in Europe) coincides with a period of lower-than-average temperature known to climatologists as the ‘little ice age,'” Oster wrote. “The colder temperatures increased the frequency of crop failure, and colder seas prevented cod and other fish from migrating as far north, eliminating this vital food source for some northern areas of Europe.”

When crops failed, “people would have searched for a scapegoat in the face of deadly changes in weather patterns,” she wrote. Thus, desperate people traced their troubles to unpopular neighbors and outcasts allied to the devil.

Oster noted that the persecutions “spread even across the Atlantic Ocean to Salem, Massachusetts.”

Moreover, she added, “The coldest segments of this ‘little ice age’ period were in the 1590s and between 1680 and 1730.”

San Diego – In the western San Bernardino Mountains, near the highway that links Los Angeles and Las Vegas, scientists recently discovered a geological mystery: colossal rocks perched in precarious poses right next door to the San Andreas Fault.

It’s not the rocks’ balancing act that is perplexing, said Lisa Grant Ludwig, a scientist who presented this puzzle to colleagues this week here at the annual meeting of the Seismological Society of America.

It’s how the rocks have managed to stay that way with such an aggressive maker of powerful earthquakes just a few miles away.
