On April 24, a 19-year-old man from Brasil posted a desperate ad on Craigslist pleading for someone to adopt his dog from an animal control facility in northern California – the ad read:

FREE DOBERMAN (san mateo) CA
PLEASE HELP MY DOG
my Doberman/pitbull has been captured by the aspca when she got away one night when I was on a trip unfortunetly they capture my 9 yr old boxer too (I love her to death)
I could only pay the fee for my boxer to get out witch is $90 (im paying for)
but my biggest concern is that since they have been there for a while tthey want to charge me $150 just for my Doberman and if we don’t nothing about it my 4-24-14 by 4:00 they will put her to sleep
I can’t afford to take both of them out so im posting this asking anyone out there if you want the Doberman for the impound fee of $150
but the final day would be at 4-24-14 at 4pm any later than that they will put her to sleep
the Doberman is less than a year old she doesn’t like cats but she is very sweet to kids, and other dogs please reply as soon as possible

Rescuers in the area saw the ad and they took it upon themselves to make sure that the dogs were not killed – several women went to Facebook with a plea for funds and within hours, enough money had been raised to spring the dogs from the animal control facility.

The dog named Lakota disappeared from Ken and Barb Toczek’s home on Oct. 9.Ken is a disabled diabetic.

A handler tracked the 4-year-old female Australian Shepard down Forest Service Road 3350 and determined she was picked up by a vehicle.

“We don’t know who took her,” Barb said. “It was hunting season at the time she disappeared. We speculate it was a hunter that came through.”

The Toczeks hired an international K-9 search unit to look for the dog and posted a notice on Craigslist.

Then, on Thursday, they got a phone call from the Whatcom Humane Society: “We think we have your dog.”

Business Insider

A tourist gazes up towards the dome of the U.S. Capitol in Washington.

Someone — perhaps a furloughed federal employee — had enough of the government shutdown and put the U.S. Capitol up for rent on Craigslist.

It looks like Craiglist took the ad down, but ThinkProgress’ Zach Beauchamp found it via the WayBack Machine.

$1000 / 8br – 775000ft² – LARGE HOUSE! LOTS OF ROOM! RECENTLY OPEN! (Capitol Hill),” reads the ad.

Here’s the text from the “renter,” who takes umbrage with House Republicans:

So my roommates all left because of a job thing and I need to make rent. I really think this place is great and I’ve been living here for a while (incumbency FTW!). I don’t want to leave but the utilities are a real bitch to afford on your own. Some facts about the digs:

Still of Devon Melton - Fox 2 Now, http://aka.ms/devonmelton

A 12-year-old boy from Ferguson, Mo., has blown us away with his courage and sacrifice.

Devon Melton’s mother, Christina Craig, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and his parents are struggling with the financial burden of her illness.

I overheard her talking on the phone,” Devon told KTVI. “I just asked her are you ok, because her tears were running down her face. She said she was failing me as a parent because she’s always sick, and I had to help.”

That’s when Melton decided to step in.

He got the idea of holding a garage sale, but he didn’t have much of his own to give away. So he began reaching out to potential donors on Craiglist’s ‘Free’ section with a moving email that soon went viral.

He wrote:

Hi this is Devon. I am the one that messaged you on Craigslist. My mom is amazing she and my dad take care of my two brothers, me and my sister. She has breast cancer and I heard her crying one day after she had her surgery. I thought she was hurt so I went to her door. I heard her say I’m losing everything because I am sick. We are about to lose our home, electric, gas and dad lost his job..I went to my preacher and asked how can I help. He said to do a garage sale. I went to every house on my road getting donations for the garage sale..

My mom deserves the best and I want to help her because she helps everyone. Even with her sick she still works at the food pantry at our church. She says people have to eat and God blessed us to be part of a ministry that can feed people. I just wish it was mom’s turn to be blessed with a timeout like she says she needs. I hope we can get things together and I can really help my mom.

The post inspired a slew of donations from Craigslisters. KTVI reports that he’s received over 200 emails from people wanting to help and has recently had to expand the sale to a bigger location.

He’s raised $120 so far, and plans to continue holding the sale until all the donations are sold.

“I can give up a couple of my things and.. put the hard work in,” he told KDSK. “She takes care of me, so I thought I should take care of her for once.”
